Fast computer for data intensive usage.

I recently upgraded to Pro Tools 12 and needed a computer that keep up with the required minimum specs. It's an LE system but I'm constantly maxing out my track count along with running video simultaneously (I work in Post). The i7 is more than capable of handling the software and the 8GBs of RAM keep it from lagging and freezing up on me every two seconds (as was the case with a brand new i5 Mac Mini I bought but had to return as it was horrible at multitasking). This computer is fast can handle me doing multiple tasks at once. I also swapped out one of 4GB ram cards for an 8GB card, which thanks to the fact that this is a 2012 model, was simple and a breeze. The only drawback I've had with it is that the computer can get a bit warm fairly quickly. So far it hasn't proven to be problematic, but I also know I'm pushing it pretty hard on a consistent basis. I would highly recommend this computer if you need something that's compact, but still pretty powerful.Lire l'avis complet...

2012 i7 2.6 1TB 16gb/RAM

My particular unit is a CTO (configure to order) i7 quad core 2.6GHz with 16gb of RAM. This machine screams! It also has a 1TB+ factory-installed fusion drive in addition to turbo-boost capability. As fast as this system is, I can't even imagine how exciting the 3.0 configuration must be.
It's a shame that Apple chose to downgrade the Mac mini to a dual core processor after this model. IMO, this machine is the most outstanding and flexible mini to date. I was fortunate enough to get one at an unbelievably low price in nearly new condition.
Please refer to the everymac site for more detailed info on this. They are an excellent source for all info on Macs.

Fusion Drive not set up properly

When I received the mini, the SSD and HHD of the fusion drive were shown as separate drives through finder, disk manager and on the desk top. I had had no experience with Fusion Drives in the past so I had no idea that it was a problem. I tried three or four different ways to migrate my data from my existing iMac to the mini but time after tiime there was not enough space according to ""Migration Assistant". I then resorted to manually installing the os on the SSD and manually moving other data files to the HHD hoping I could get them to work.

After two days of this, I said to myself that it should be this hard to do. So I finally did some research on what a fusion drive is and how is is created and supposed to be how it's to be exposed to the operating system. After following the steps to create "fuse" the SSD and HHD together, The drive appeared as one to the system and I was able to use migration assistant to move all my data.

As fusion drives seem to be rare, even today, I just chalked it up to a positive learning experience.

As far as the general performance of this model I am thoroughly how it's speed measures up to even much newer iMacs. Very happy with the performance.

I would only advice against considering purchasing this model or one this old is if one needed a system that output modern day resolutions and response time.

For me, I've had 3 iMacs and to MacBook Pros. I'm very happy with this best of the minis Apple ever made, with a 24" monitor.

Best Mac Mini year yet

The one I purchased was supposed to be an i7 quad core processor but turned out to be an i5 dual core. The seller made an adjustment to the price and it was still a good value. The late 2012 Mac Mini is, in my opinion, the best option for someone wanting a Mac with expandability options. It can take up to 16GB of ram and will hold two 2.5" hard drives. One with the i7 processor, a SSD and 16GB would handle almost any task you could undertake. I'm using mine as a media server and video streamer for my home entertainment center. It is capable of running OS Sierra and Windows 10 via Apples Boot Camp. This gives it several more years before it becomes obsolete.Lire l'avis complet...

Amazing upgrade for 2008 iMac

I was looking at 2015-2017 iMacs to replace my "obsolete" and very slow 2008 24" iMac (no longer supported with new OS, etc). I'd already done the simple things like maxing out the RAM, and it was time to move on. I was choking on the cost of new or refurbished 27" iMacs, so decided going a different route might be better. Found this mac mini with i7, dual 1 TB hdd's and the latest version that still allowed some user upgrades. I connected it to the 24" 1080p monitor I was using with the iMac (for dual display), and added a 27" 1440p for a dual monitor setup. It came with 8 GB RAM, and was noticeably faster to boot and much more responsive than the old iMac.

I have $800 in this setup, less than half of what I would have spent for more recent iMacs, and probably have over 90% of the functionality I need.

Get this unit, not the 2014 model

Apple actually downgraded the current (2014) Mac Mini. This late 2012 model which was manufactured up to August of 2014 is the best. The new models cannot be expanded. Memory is fixed, only one drive, dual core max available. This late 2012 series allows memory changes, two hard drives, quad core i7 hyper threaded CPU which is really an 8 core. We now have three of these, all bought from ebay sellers after Apple discontinued them.Lire l'avis complet...

Great features for a reasonable price

It does need a very small place, very easy to setup and have great built in features. It has built in sound which I didn't know prior to buying it. The only problem I have with it is it doesn't have a built in microphone. For someone who is used to work on desktop computers, this is normal and expected but I was moving from a mac book pro where everything was built in. Generally speaking, I recommend this to anyone who needs great features, reasonable price, and limited space.Lire l'avis complet...

This is perfect for my needs.

This is the perfect "little" desktop, it is all you could ask for, if it for home use. It connects with my iPad and my iPhone. I liked it enough, I bought another one for my kids. If you are looking for a desk computer and don't want a laptop, this is what you should buy. Used my existing monitor, keyboard and mouse. It is also had bluetooth capabilities, which frees up your USB ports. Doesn't have a disc player, but who really uses one these days anyway. Highly recommend the 2012 version, because you can upgrade. Newer models do not have this option.Lire l'avis complet...

All of the great Mac experience with none of the cost-overruns.

My day job is in IT; so I enjoy using Windows for work, and running Linux on good yet cheap PC-based hardware, but my night job is in music where I'm used to reliable, purpose-built hardware like TASCAM recorders for tracking audio. As the industry has forced everyone onto Pro Tools, the choice was fight with PC hardware, drivers and Windows, or use a Mac and press Record. I wasn't interested in paying a premium on a Mac Pro or Mac Book, but--instead--get away with an affordable display, affordable peripherals and so on, which is what the Mac Mini lets you do. A box with a fast processor and MacOS with a Thunderbolt interface to hook up an external SSD drive for the audio files. The one thing I didn't like was having to use up one of the 4 USB ports on an external DVD burner for archiving my multi-track audio. In the end, I ended up buying a Mac Ally USB hub to break out the keyboard, mouse and iLok connections so I could still connect the burner, a USB interface and backup system drive. I also would have included an SD reader up front behind a closing door that would have preserved aesthetics but provided for transferable storage where WiFi or Ethernet is unavailable. But if I wanted all that, I would have bought a PC--which I own already. This box exists for one purpose and that is to run Pro Tools and be the new RAM and CPU brain behind my home recording operation such that I can collaborate on projects with other studios and home recording musicians.Lire l'avis complet...

The last best.

The best Mac Mini so far and the last generation that can be upgraded. The i7's performance is noticeably faster than the i5.
After the 2012 generation Apple soldered down the RAM (unforgivable) and made access to the internal drive far more difficult.
With an expansion kit, I was able to configure this mini with an SSD boot drive and a 1T data drive.
This model gets a bit hotter than the i5 so it needs good ventilation.
The USB 3 is a big advantage over previous models.
