Beautifully made story of survival of the human spirit

Pulitzer Prize-winning ANGELA'S ASHES is the real life story of author Frank McCourt who was born in Brooklyn but his father (played by Robert Carlyle) after marriage to Angela,& his infant daughter dies, Frank’s Dad decides that he wants to go home to Ireland. He cannot find any work, which he blames on his North Irish accent, turns even more to drink and drinks what little amount of money he gets on the dole, leaving his family to pretty much fend for themselves to survive. Because of ignorance and poverty more of his siblings die and Frank and his brother Malachy to go to school with without any shoes, hungry and in rags.
His mother, Angela, is played by Emily Watson, is a woman who follows her husband, but not until she puts her foot down does Franks’ father abandon them after going to England for work (to drink, really) and never returns.
In the book, we learn that Frank loves his Dad and would have followed him to the ends of the earth and I think that the movie accomplishes this emotion. Even with his human vices and neglect, Frank’s father does love his children, but in the book you get a picture of a man overwhelmed with grief, a family he does not know how to take care of, and ill equipped to deal with the life he has made, that he takes the easy way out.
Frank struggles through the poverty and his dreams of going to America keeps him optimistic. Although they live in desperate poverty, Frank gives us insight into his life showing us it does have wonderfully funny times. It is a beautifully made story of survival of the human spirit.

A must watch!

Angela’s Ashes is about a family’s hard times in Ireland during the 1930’s. It brings the reality to the screen of just how hard times can be. A must watch.

Great movie.

Poignant coming of age story about growing up in Ireland during the great depression. Characters are very well-written, setting and circumstances are both tragic; yet hopeful at the same time.

This movie does it's story no justice........

I must admit I am biased in my review of this movie, as I first read the book, which was a lovely piece of modern literature. But unfortunately the movie does the story very little justice. In fact the movie is SO depressing and void of this writer's magnificent sense of humor during times of adversity, that it fails to touch the very heart and soul of the original story. It in no way captures the depth of despair, joy, hope and longing that the author so compelling expresses in his telling of his childhood story.Lire l'avis complet...

Angela’s Ashes

A fantastic book, so much so that I was inspired to read the subsequent 2 books by Frank McCourt.
