GREAT MOVIE!

AMERICAN BEAUTY won the academy award for best picture, Kevin Spacey for best actor in a leading role, and Sam Mendes for best director. This is one of the greatest movies ever made, and I realized this not long into the film. AB is about the lives of two families who are bent on self destruction while living next door to one other in a quiet suburb of Los Angeles. The film focuses on the lead character Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), and it is told from his point of view from start to finish. Lester is a man who has become frustrated with his life at the age of forty-two, and insists on having little to no responsibilties. Lester also shows no respect for his boss at the advertising agency, and blackmails him with a sexual harrassment charge in exchange for large sum of money. Lester soon finds more satisfaction working minimum wage at a fast food restaurant, smoking pot, and working out in an attempt to attract a sixteen year old girlfriend of his daughters for whom he had developed a strong attraction towards while watching her cheerlead. Lester's wife Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening) has enough problems failing to sell houses as a real estate agent not to mention her husbands sudden lack of interest in everything that matters including their marrage. The Fitts family next door is like a bad car wreck too. A United States Marine Colonel (Chris Cooper) lives inside, and this man is physically abusive towards his son Ricky (Wes Bentley) at times, and demands urine samples every six months in order to make certain there is no further drug use. Lester comes to know Ricky who is an eccentric teenager dealing drugs, and recording Lester's family in the privacy of their home with a video camera. AB explores some dark subject matter while managing to be extremely funny at the same time. It is so well written, and acted. Best Picture Oscar for a Movie that actually deserves it!!!

In addition to being one of the most original movies to come along in years, this character study is beautifully directed and is adorned with some remarkable visuals worthy of purchasing this movie on Blu-Ray. Written by Alan Ball, (Six Feet Under, True Blood) it shows the path a middle-aged man's life takes when he decides to make some intense steps to a better quality of life. It shows that it is never to late to live, as death could be right around the corner. kevin Spacey gives arguably his best performance ever, as well as Annette Bening. And in addition to being one of the hottest looking women on screen, Mena Suvari can act, as well. Many peopleI've spoken to did not like this movie. Like cavier, it's not for everyone.
