Irwin Allen--The Master of Fairy Tales??

Five years after the "Disaster Craze" of the 1970's, Irwin Allen attempted to become the "Master of TV Mini Series Fairy Tales." (In fact, he had an even bigger cast lined up for an all-star extravaganza production of 'Pinocchio' in the works..but fell ill, and died before it could be made.)
---So..how do you summarize this elephantine production, one that hits big on so many levels at times, then misses big at other times??
---Let's start with NATALIE GREGORY in the title role. She is excellent. She looks the part, is kind of like an even cuter version of Dakota Fanning, and IS Alice. "Irwin and Co." certainly hit the bullseye when they cast this tot for the miniseries. The girl could not only act (by the way, where DID she go? I never heard from her again...) but she also hit the notes (of some Godawfully bad songs at times) every time.
---Since we are talking about the songs, let's be kind and say...THEY TRIED. Steve Allen-penned, and backed by a great orchestra, one would (and should) expect better. A few of the production numbers are "tolerable", but on the whole...they are so bad, they make the soundtrack of "Stripes" look like a masterpiece by comparison. Sammy Davis Jr comes off the best, with a coll dance number to boot...but the rest look like a bad High School production. This is a shame, as the series was HEAVILY touted as a musical, and the music is its own worst enemy. Almost single-handedly destroying the entire production.
---Storywise, this is definitely the most faithful to the book, and the endless stream of cameos is actually enjoyable rather than distracting (as was the case in other mega-all star-films like 'Greatest Story Ever Told' and 'Pepe') and helps adults endure the 4 hour running time playing "spot the star" while the kids enjoy the film. In fact, some of the stars are SO good in their roles (Meadows, Caesar, Sammy Davis, Telly Savalas, etc) that it is obvious they put their hearts into the making of this film. Good for them, as it shows an old-fashioned "College Try" rarely seen anymore.
---So, if you can overlook the songs (shame on Steve Allen) you will probably LOVE this movie. And as for the cast--one of the GREATEST ever assembled in one movie--it is a veritible "who's who" of modern cinema.
---I remember when this Miniseries aired back in 1985, and was really surprised to see Irwin Allen's name attached to the production. But it was refreshing to see that he could bring a film to the screen that didn't require a bee-sting, a burning building, a flood, a tidal wave, a cave-in, or even a cable car hanging by a wire to be enjoyable. Allen was a master showman...hokey at times...but always a showman first and foremost. I mean, he COULD have called this "Beyond the Alice Adventure" or "The Mad Hatter Inferno", or even Voyage to the Bottom of the Rabbit Hole." Instead, he genuinely tried to out-do Disney (a feat rarely done) and he should be given kudos for that.

IF YOUR STILL A KID..... OR YOU ARE A KID!!!!!!

Originally a made for televison movie, in 1985. An outstanding cast for its time. If your older, you will like it for that reason! If you're younger, you will like it for all the wild charactors. Very wild sets, in the style of "The Wizard of Oz". Something more like a theatrical broadway musical. With a tint of "Shirly Temple" Based on two books, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Fantastic purchase

I haven't seen this since it first aired on television back in 85. I loved this version of Alice in wonderland and hadn't even thought about it until someone mentioned it on Facebook. I sang along with the songs like I had just heard them the night before. Thank you so much for giving me back some of my childhood!Lire l'avis complet...

Alice in wonderland

This was a movie i hadnt seen since it came to TV as a mini series in 1985. Its also a movie that i have remembered since. The acting is great and the story keeps you interested. The many people in this movie make it worth paying any price for. My kids aged 15,12 and 8 loved it as well. I would have to say that the really bad thing about this movie is the fact that some of the greatest actors in our generation are in it and are now not with us but remind s of their greateness. The great Iogene Coca and Sammi Davis Jr., Shelly Winters, Telly Savales and of course Red Buttons. And the great ones that are still with us like Arte Johnson and Ernest Borgnine. This is a very unforgetable movie that you will love to see over and over again. I would warn you if you have little kids there are a few parts in it that may scare them there is a large evil dragon character called the Jaberwoky that is rather scary for small kids or any that are easily frightened. It doesnt last long only a few times in each episode of which there are two. The Jaberwoky should not change your mind about watching this version of "Alice In Wonderland" It is one of the best that I believe follows the book much more than any other i have ever seen. I would recomend this movie for people who love to be entertained by real actors and remember what it was like to be young.Lire l'avis complet...

A little disappointing

I'm sorry to rate this product so low, but there are a number of reasons why. I bought this movie because I had watched it as a child, but I had apparently forgotten the details. Also, my aunt had taken the time to record the entire show on VHS, so I figured it must be good. Well, I got it home and popped it in the DVD player and my wife and I were stunned. Granted, the movie is old, but here are some of the things that really bugged me. The songs are not attractive to the ears. They lack vocal elegance, and they are not the kind of song you find getting stuck in your head, except "I hate dogs and cats," which only got stuck in my head because I kept making fun of it. The costumes and actors are ridiculously fake. This is what made me almost turn the show off from the beginning. I realize the show is old and these problems stem directly from that fact, but I was expecting a lot more from this DVD. I wanted to at least rate it as average, but that would not be true to my feelings. The DVD is now sitting untouched at my house. It will probably go on that way for some time.Lire l'avis complet...

Perfect!

Every thing about this movie is perfect. I had heard that at the time of release of this movie that the little girl who starred in the movie had the biggest role in film history for a child her age. I can't imagine that her record has been surpassed to date. She was brilliant and the movie was a masterpiece. Probably the best version I have ever seen. Great supporting cast!Lire l'avis complet...

Alice in Wonderland

This movie is an absolute delight. Natalie Gregory delivers an astounding performance as Alice for both parts of the movie. She's loveable, darling, and believeable.

I love this movie for a ridiculous number of reasons, Natalie Gregory being one of many. The costuming and scenery rivals that of modern movies - a truly magnificent accomplishment, considering that it was done in 1985. An all-star cast includes Ringo Starr, Carol Channing, Sally Struthers, Ann Jillian, John Stamos, Shelley Winters, Beau Bridges, and Sammy Davis Jr., just to name a few, all playing outstanding roles that I guarantee you have never seen them play before.

The excellent portrayal of Lewis Carroll's fun and whimsical tale makes this movie appropriate for fantasy-goers of all ages. All around, it's just a bunch of good, clean fun and a classic chidren's tale that will delight much more than children.

A "Who's Who" of comedic actors, a must have.

This video has so many of our great comedy stars as characters in the story that I could not miss the chance to see it.
Keep in mind that this was made for a children's audience. I love it!
