A Kubrick Masterpiece

Stanley Kubrick is not for everybody.

Some, especially those who have grown up with the "explosion a minute" typical Hollywood blockbuster, will find the movie tedious and difficult to grasp. Others will note that every nuance of the film, every breath of oxygen, is tightly controlled to evoke emotions and thoughts that few people bother with today.

I played this for my 15 year old son, who initially had no interest in it. At first, he was annoyed at the "plodding" scenes and the awkward and dated dialogue, but at the end, he realized that he had just seen something profound.

For those who have time, there is a deeper meaning that only comes with repeated viewing. The meaning will not be handed to you on a silver platter. In fact, there are a few places you can go online where folks have dissected this movie down to every detail.

Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke were sending a message. Can you decipher it?

I am astounded that in 1967 (over ten years before Star Wars), special effects of this quality were possible. It really stands the test of time in that regard.

This movie is a masterpiece.

2001 - A Space Odyssey

I can state unequivocally that 2001 is supposed to be in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. It was shot in 2.20:1. It was not shot in Cinemascope (or anamorphic Panavision), which is 2.35:1. It was shot with straight lenses in Super Panavision 70 (65mm negative, 70mm projection print with soundtrack). Super Panavision 70 is a 2.20:1 aspect ratio format. When you are watching a 70mm print in a theater you are watching 2.20:1, which was never as wide as the anamorphic formats.

Not to mention the fact that Kubrick went to the extraordinary effort of exposing his special effects composite shots as successive passes on the original undeveloped 65mm negative (after it being held sometimes in refrigeration for up to a year or more waiting for the next pass) so that all the composite visual elements are first generation on the original camera negative, rather than the cheaper and more common optical composite dupe negative inserts. Amazing. That is why it looks as good as it does. No optical negative generations.

A Beautiful Film...and one of the best executions of the 70mm format ever.

A true Visual Masterpiece.

Not our cup of tea

We recently purchased and watched 2010: A Space Odyssey and decided to purchase 2001: A Space Odyssey for the decade this movie was filmed the special effects were outstanding. I also noticed what was science fiction during the time of this movie is now every day tech.
Now no the not so good: If we did not watch the sequel would would have been lost watching the first movie. About 20 years ago I remember starting to watch this movie and stopped because I thought it was boring.
Towards the end of the movie it looked like the producer and company dropped some acid during filming. This DVD movie will be put on a shelf and never watched again.

2001 Space Odyssey on Blu-ray

Well it is truly a great movie The only problem I have with it is just too much music.. especially for the intro way too long before the movie actually starts with the first scene.. the picture quality seems to be very good but should be more crispr since it's on Blu-ray as well as 2010 there are some scenes that they really should have touched up as far as picture quality but all in all two good movies so by all means get both on Blu-rayLire l'avis complet...

2001, the most impotant film ever?

2001 A Space Odyssey was the marriage of cinematic genius Stanley Kubrick with the equally renowned sci-fi novelist Arthur C. Clarke. The film effects of Kubrick's were ground breaking for the time - if you like special effects in movies, you need to thank Kubrick for getting it all started. The theme(s) of the movie are multi layered and most certainly intentionally ambiguous, leaving the film open to lots of interpretation. If you watched it and said "What the heck was that all about?" you aren't the only one. The film takes several viewings to take it all in. For a first viewing, just sit back and enjoy the ride. 2001 could be the most important film ever, it's that important.Lire l'avis complet...

It is an ok movie

As a classic movie about space travel made in the 1960's, it is an ok movie. It is too narrative for me. There is no by the edge of a seat action. The images and simulations are very sharp. It makes think that it was made at very later days. I still recommend it. Lire l'avis complet...

2001 on Blu Ray

I AM A SCI-FI LOVER, AND THIS WAS A BREAK THROUGH MOVIE IN IT'S GENRE. ANY SELF RESPECTING SCI-FI FAN HAS TO GIVE IT PROP'S ON THAT BASIS. BUT THAT'S A CONCEIT, AND THIS MOVIE'S BLU RAY EDITION DID NOT MEET MY EXPECTATIONS.

THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT WAS THE LACK OF LOSSLESS DOLBY. ONCE YOU HEAR TRUE HD SOUND LIKE MOST BLU RAY DISCS, OLD FASHIONED DOLBY DIGITAL IS A LETDOWN.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE THE CG EFFECTS WERE EXCELLENT.

BUT ONCE AGAIN THERE WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT IN THE VIDEO. THE BASIC MOVIE SCENES THEMSELVES SHOWED NO IMPROVEMENT. NOW I DO REALIZE THAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 3 DECADES AGO, BUT THE VIDEO ITSELF WAS LITTLE, IF ANY BETTER THAN MY UPCONVERTED VERSION ON DVD.
