Good, tells it as it was.

Very few who were in Nam have the courage, determination or wish, so as to write about their experiences. I do not blame them. some lived near perfect air conditioned & well fed lives. Some smoked a lot of dope & were bombed a fair bit of the time, others went through hell knowing everything that could happen. At times living like pigs, not knowing who was friend or who was foe & even finding that the supposed friend could put a bullet through your back, or frag you with no understanding as to why. Different things took place in different Corps, but you could be killed or wounded anywhere, when out country especially, from north to south. This book comes to telling you how things were really like at the 'sharp' end & it pulls no punches. Ever try pushing a mans intestines back into a mans belly & trying to sow them in whilst under a poncho in a rain storm? Yes, that for some was the real deal. Disappointing Read

What a dissapointment. Having read other excellent books on the Vietnam War, I expected 13 Cent Killers to be of the same high standard. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The author felt it necessary to heap lengthy praise on the US Marines in general and certain snipers / leaders in particular at regular intervals. Even when describing a battle, he would deviate off-course in order to first heap praises on some or other individual. On other occasions he deviates in order to expand on his opinion of the leadership and their interests. The actual battle descriptions are few and far between. There is also much repeition of matters that he had mentioned previously. Even the name, "13 cent Killers" is spattered liberally throughout the book. Great read

One of those books you wish it wouldn't end. Joined the Marine Corps when I was seventeen during the Korean War. Wanted to do my part. This book brought back fond memories of the training, the traditions,

Real story, real heroes, excellent book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have had the distinct pleasure to visit with John Culbertson, Tom Casey and Ron Willoughby. All of these men are heroes in my book. This narrative describing their tour in Vietnam is right on the money. If you want to read a story of what is was like, you will enjoy this. John Culbertson also shares some of his personal views, but they are his and do not take away what these men did as a unit and their missions. I happen to agree with his points but that is irrelevant. The danger and sacrifices all our soldiers put into that war without support from their government, press or people is a black mark in our country's history, more than John's opinions.Lire l'avis complet...

True Vietnam experience

13 Cent Killers gave me a factual account of what Marine snipers had to endure fighting the Viet Cong. This book is descriptive and does not sugar coat the horrors of war and the sacrifices made by young American men barely out of high school. The book also questions the actions of the American political leaders who forced the military to drag out the war in the south, when clear vicoty awaited the heroic Americans if they could only be allowed to attack the north into Hanoi. Excellent perspective on the tragedy of Vietnam which could have been a huge success with a dose of courage and commitment by the U.S. Government. This book is controversial in some areas, but I think it is a must read for the sake of truth.Lire l'avis complet...

The way things were

This book is a great account of the way things were back then. The author give his first hand detailed view in a no nonsense format.
