Nikon AF-S Micro 105 mm f/2.8 VR

Nikon replacement of their previous mid range macro lens. I love the longer range of the 105 mm over the 60 mm macro length. Nikon designates it's macro lenses as "micro". Previously I owned and loved the Nikon AF-D Micro 105 mm. This lens adds an excellent VR or vibration compensation ability to the lens to lessen shaking and un-sharp photos.

This lens is excellent for portraiture due to its fast aperture (f/2.8) and longer distance (105 mm) compared to kit lenses, thus permitting nice bokeh (blurring the distance behind main subject).

It's also excellent for fireworks. The 105 mm helps to better fill the frame and the faster aperture helps to shorten the time needed to get the shot.

The lens is very sharp and can be hand held for non-critical macro work. For extreme close ups a tripod and remote release are needed.

Love this solidly built, though hefty and somewhat expensive lens; although not really heavier or more costly than it's name brand rivals.

Tack sharp, maybe not for the casual shooter.

Tack sharp for actual macro shooting, and I love the bokeh. I will give it a try as a portrait lens. The only caveat I have, and it's not really an issue if you're aware. The depth of field with lens plays a much larger role than average medium zoom lens. The same aspects that give you the wonderful bokeh can leave even details, even just a butterfly's thickness away, out of focus. That can be good or bad depending on what you want. As an example I was shooting a match box car about 16" away setting so I could see the front and one side. In order to all 2" of the car into focus, bumper to bumper as it were, I had to shoot at f13.
One thing that took me by surprise is that although it's an f2.8 lens, you really can't open up to that aperture until you're focused about 6" out. I suspect it has something to do with the internal focusing. At minimum focusing distance, Nikon says a foot, the lens will only open up to f4.
All that said, I really like this lens and it's going to be in my bag a lot.

So Far So Good

I've only used it very little at this point, but it worked well in all aspects. The image is sharp as it should be and its focusing was easy. All of the automatic features of the camera worked fine. I can't wait to have time for more extensive use. But so far, its performance was excellent, and so was its value.Lire l'avis complet...

macro and portrait master

pros--sharpness across f stops. VR definitely saves a couple stops, i.e., I have shaky hands and could never get focused shots at 1/30 normally. built solidly.
cons--see last point above. fairly bulky for a 105 2.8 but still OK for street use. still closer to a 50 mm flyweight and a 70-200 tank.Lire l'avis complet...

Outstanding Lens

This is the kind of lens you dream about. It is optically sharp and clear and produces beautiful images. The autofocus is quite accurate, but if you want to use manual focus, it is easy to do so. It is just a classic for both portraiture and macro photography. I am not a professional, so there may be details that a pro would nitpick, but as an experienced amateur, it is everything I could ask for. Yes, it is more expensive than Tokina, but I think it is a superior piece of glass. Lire l'avis complet...

Great Macro Lens for Nikon

This is the latest in a series of 105mm macro lenses that Nikon has been making for many years. This one is the VR (II) model with AF-S type autofocus. It focuses quickly and accurately even in rather dim light. The image quality is fantastic, probably the best macro lens in that focal length being made today. Mine was new and the manual focus was rather stiff, but that is typical for a new lens and will loosen up a bit with use. Anyone who uses macro capability often will want this lens. (It can also double as a great portrait lens, the fast f/2.8 f-stop giving it great bokeh or out-of-focus background.)Lire l'avis complet...

I did no know I NEEDED this lens in my arsenal …

This is such an amazing lens, and not only for Macro, but also for portraits, VR and fixed 2.8 aperture is great and gives you a lot of flexibility!! Works great on my D800 and on my Z7 (with the NTZ adapter) Lire l'avis complet...

A great product, Excellent service and communications.

The product is used and has some very minor cosmetic signs of use. The lens performs as intended. I have now used the lens several time with my D780 and I am very happy with the results.

You can't go wrong. Nice working distance.

A great 105 micro-Nikkor machine. I would like to get some extension tubes too. And maybe a camera rack.
