A piece of history.

This is a piece of history. An excellent card for late 90's video games with glide support. The stock heatsink and fans did not cool enough, so I replaced with Arctic silver 5 and Titan TT-CUV2AB gpu fans. My chip revision could only overclock from 166 (stock) to 173 MHz without visual artifacts, and it still generated tons of heat, so I installed 2 more Titan TT-CUV2AB on the back of the board and it cooled the chips effectively and I was able to get 174mhz with minor artifacts, but didn't freeze in Benchmarks. I paired it with a PIII-S 1400 MHz, and with that overclocked was able to get over 10,800 on 3D mark 99. Not a high score by today's standards, and paying $150 for this card last month, one must really love classic gaming. I've also paired with with a voodoo2 12mb SLI, and Voodoo 1 6mb, and Matrox m3D 4mb, so that I Have most API covered. This has been an expensive windows 98se build in 2017, for late 90's tech, but it's been worth it and so much fun.Lire l'avis complet...

3DFX Voodoo 5 5500 Gaming Machine

Well, first thing, first. I don't speak english very well,so probably I need editing.
Why I bought this old grafic card? Well, the answer is simple, I build a sistem, capable to play old windows games,in full 3d glory. Of course, the choice was obvious, I need it a video card capable of glide, and what better choice I had, then the best Voodoo card witch hit the market? This is in fact,an upgrade from Voodoo 3 3000.
My vintage sistem now is an P III Copermaine 1GHz, 1024 Mb of RAM (maxiumum suported by the Windows 98,I have more but I can't use it),Voodoo 5 5500, 2xHDD summing 100 Gb,and some other stuff...
I'm waiting another proc, P III 1,4 GHz Tualtin, bought on ebay, and my vintage PC will be complete.
Of course I'm happy with the card, it does exactly what I wanted to do. The games of the era,are running smooth, I can use Glide, Direct 3D and Open GL and life is good.

The best Voodoo to have if you can find one.

Not having to piggyback off a primary adapter, like in earlier Voodoo's, means no compatibility issues. No extra slot to sacrifice. Dual processor offers SLI equivalent performace. 64MB memory will handle anything that supports Glide rendering effortlessly. Even Direct3D games run pretty well on this, somewhat comparable to a GeForce2 in terms of performance. Active cooling is sufficient if you do not plan on overclocking. Games are best run at 1024x768 or lower, but in Windows or Linux, you will be able to drive desktop resolution all the way up to 1920x1080 until VGA port bandwidth becomes an issue.

There are negatives. Out of 5 AGP 2x motherboards I tried this card with only one worked - Asus with P2B chipset. The rest which worked with Nvidia, ATI and Matrox cards refused to boot with Voodoo. BIOS had to be tweaked with the help of a different AGP card first. Default BIOS settings did not work in my case. Have an alternative card on hand when building your retro gaming rig. Make sure the AGP slot on your motherboard has matching notches to the cutouts on the card.

Regarding noise, it's pretty quiet. A single Slot 1 CPU with factory heatsink is louder than this whole card.
