Just Cause (DVD, 1999)

In 1986, in Ochopee, Florida, 11-year-old Joanie Shriver is kidnapped, raped, and murdered. Bobby Earl Ferguson is arrested by officers Tanny Brown and J. T. Wilcox, who proceed to beat Bobby into confessing to the murder. Bobby is placed on trial, where Bobby's defense attorney McNair puts up a lousy defense for Bobby, and Bobby is sentenced to be executed. Now, eight years later, Bobby hands a letter to his grandmother Evangeline and asks Evangeline to go to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to hire Harvard law professor Paul Armstrong to clear Bobby's name. At Harvard, Paul is attacking capital punishment in a campus debate, when Evangeline arrives and hands the letter to Paul. Paul goes home, where his wife Laurie is throwing a birthday party for their young daughter Katey. Laurie reads the letter and she encourages Paul to take the case, even though he hasn't practiced law in 25 years. Paul, Laurie, and Katey head to Florida, where Paul meets Bobby in the prison. Bobby tells Paul his side of the story and what Tanny and Wilcox did. Paul begins to believe that Bobby was railroaded. Bobby tells Paul to speak to Blair Sullivan, a man who is also on death row. Blair gives Paul some clues that could prove Bobby's innocence, and Blair's own guilt. But in the process of trying to clear Bobby, Paul learns some disturbing truths about Bobby, putting Paul and his family in a fight for their lives. "Just Cause" is a psychological thriller about the American justice system in general, and capital punishment in particular. There are several plot twists which will surprise you, and towards the end of the movie, the action really starts to set in. Sean Connery is reliable as the stout, solid professor Armstrong, and as the centerpiece of the movie, he is totally convincing. But as the dubious police officer Tanny Brown, it is Laurence Fishburne who truly excels. A solid thriller that delivers the goods.Lire l'avis complet...

Just Cause (DVD, 1999)

A liberal Harvard Law professor (Sean Connery) is convinced to go to Florida and look into the case of a black man who was convicted of killing a white woman. He doubts the man's guilt, and has a distain for the death penalty. The convicted man, Bobby Earl Fergueson, is a highly intelligent, and articulate former Cornell student who has been convicted of raping and killing a young white girl. He has been sentenced to die in the electric chair. As Paul Armstrong (Connery) further investigates the case, he finds evidence that Ferguson's statements of being tortured and beaten by the police chief detective, Tanny Brown (Laurence Fishburn), may indeed be true. As it turned out, the murdered girl was the best friend of Brown's daughter.

Fergueson said that the real killer was a serial killer currently in prison on death row, named Blair Sullivan (Ed Harris). When Sullivan discloses to Armstrong the location of the murder weapon, a knife, which he claimed to have hidden in a culvert, he goes in search of it. He found it where it was described and now Armstrong sets out to have Ferguson's sentence exonerated. He gets a re-trial and is released from prison.

Sullivan then calls Armstrong and asks him to visit his parents. He finds their bodies butchered, and Sullivan mockingly laughs that he made a deal with Ferguson to set him free, by admitting the murder of the girl if he would kill Sullivan's parents who had turned him in.

Now acquitted of the murder, Ferguson is going after Armstrong's wife (Kate Capshaw). In a previous rape trial she was the prosecutor. Although the case was thrown out of court, Ferguson had been brutalized while in jail and castrated. In addition, he was thrown out of Cornell, robbing him of any future. Ferguson planned to murder both Armstrong's wife and daughter, and feed their bodies to alligators. Professor Armstrong and Detective Brown come to the rescue and kill Ferguson and save his family.

Crime thriller with lots of starpower & plot twists.

This is an excellent thriller with twists at every turn. It has an all-star cast. Even the minor roles are played by actors who are major stars in other films: a very young Scarlett Johanssen as Connery's daughter, and Hope Lange as his mother-in-law. Blair Underwood, Ed Harris, and Laurence Fishburne are perfect for their parts. See this without reading any spoilers and there are sure to be some plot points that surprise you. Highly recommended if you like CRIMINAL MINDS.Lire l'avis complet...

Just 'Cause You Can...

...doesn't mean you should!

Yup, in short: this movie is a decent one, but not a great one.
Why? Well, for starters, like most adaptations it never quite seems to hit the mark. Having only seen the movie and not read the book that this movie is based on, I can tell that the book must have had a lot more going on than this movie did (i.e. character development). As far as thrillers go it is also pretty standard and without any hint of real surprise - one spends half the time thinking "oh, I should have known." (no spoilers here)

As for the performances, they're hit and miss. Sean Connery turns in a good performance, whereas Laurence Fishburn offers a rather inconsistent one. The wrongfully convicted man, comes off as whiny at times but also comes off as the character you expect him to be - also inconsistent. The real gold in this movie is Ed Harris who plays his role rather brilliantly, leaving the watcher to beg the question: why didn't he get more screen time? The supporting cast isn't a waste but wasn't a necessity either - like most thrillers they often serve to distract the audience so as to give the ending a greater impact. However, this is one rare case where they don't do a good job of averting the audience's attention.

All in all, Just Cause really proves that just because you can make a movie adaptation of a book doesn't necessarily mean you should...

"The Trials of Job - the Sinners' Revenge"

Just an Excellent Movie... back then, 1995 (when movie was made), people were not as inundated with the racial/victimhood nonsense... Now, almost 30 years later - it is a bit easier to see thru the holes of the proclaimed innocence of the purported 'victim'... still, the Plot twists and turns effectively to pull in the audience. My Wife never saw this Movie until now - and got sucked into the storyline and was taken aback at the outcome. My only criticism: soundtrack claimed "Dolby DIgital", but no AC-3 5.1 - only Por-Logic 2.1. Still sounded good, but the labeling on soundtracks is off the mark more times than naught.Lire l'avis complet...

Just Cause (DVD, 1999

A Harvard law professor takes up the case of a southern black man on death row for murdering a white woman, a crime he may not have committed. Discovering the truth proves difficult, as a Bible-spouting inmate and the brutal police officer who convicted the condemned man lead the professor down blind alleys and into treacherous waters.

Another great movie and a must see.....

Never a Dull Moment

If you want great acting to the point that you are totally taken in - hook, line and sinker - then this is the movie for you. Connery has always been a favorite, but Ed Harris' performance will give you nightmares for a week - it is that chilling. Plenty of twists and turns and flip flops in this one to where you feel like you've been on a killer ride, so dreadful that when the ride ends, you can't let go of the handles. What you have experienced keeps you locked in place.

If you like surprises and "who (REALLY) did it" movies, then this will not disappoint. Not for the faint of heart, but highly recommended for those veterans needing a fix of thrill.
