"Not good enough" And Horrible Controls.

Yeah, yeah, this was supposed to be the game to contend with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and guess what? It failed miserably. It has the right idea, but wherever it tries to add some innovation of its own, it actually HARMS itself. Let me explain how in this review.

Graphics: 5.5/10

For the PS One, the graphics are actually quite sub-par. The skaters almost halfway resemble their real-life counterparts (and on the Playstation 1, that's saying a lot), but still, everything looks... SO... DARN... GRAINY! For fun, play this game after playing a PS2 skating game. Then the true faults of the graphics REALLY start to show. But what really stops the graphics from showing their full potential are the animations.

The animations in this game are... horrible. I mean, SKATING is nice and smooth, and doing an Ollie looks fine, but when you get to the kickflip, you'll be left saying, whoa! What did I just do? It SAYS I did a kickflip, but my skater only moved his legs and arms for about one tenth of a second and the board seemed to FLICKER! The only time you can make out a kickflip (or any other trick, for that matter), is when you're either so used to the game that everything begins to look like actual tricks (and trust me, you're just fooling yourself), or when you're on half-pipe and you happen to do the trick while you're facing the camera in midair. And trust me- that only happens about 5% of the time. Overall- curse those animations!

Sound: 9/10

Okay, the sound is quite good. The skating sounds mirror real life, and the music is amazing. Well, they HAD to get one part of the game right.

Gameplay: 4/10

Ouch. They messed up here. They copy half of Tony Hawk, and then they take away half of what they copied and replaced it with something that doesn't nearly measure up to what they took away. I mean, come on, if you're going to copy something, COPY it, don't half-copy it and have the added bonus of having a worse game along with being called a copycat. They basically copy the control scheme and the timed goals thing, along with the necessity of money to unlock new levels (except that its RESPECT). But what did they take away? First, we'll look at the controls.

The controls are, in one word, unresponsive. Remember how in Tony Hawk 2 you could input any number of trick commands, just by pressing square or circle and a direction over and over, and you'd do all those tricks until your commands that you did ran out or you hit the ground painfully? That way, it was possible to do about 5 kickflips in midair. Now, in Grind session, you have to WAIT until the trick animation finishes before doing anything else. That's right- if you try to do a kickflip 5 times in a row, you'll only do ONE. Plus, while you're standing in shock, thinking about how unresponsive these controls are, you land. Instead of 500 points, 100 points! Yeah!

Oh yeah, and manuals aren't worth jack. If you manual, you can't hold it under any circumstances. No wonder 100,000 points is a big score in this game!

Now, for the level goals.

Unlike Pro Skater 2, the level goals are ALL the same in every level, except in competitions, where you have to get a medal. No new things like Tailslide the Ledge or Ollie the Magic Bum. You have to get all the gaps (or technical lines), knock over 10 things, get a progressively higher score, and the like. Not even ONE special goal a level! No!!!

Sorry if I compared this to the "Tony Hawk" Games.
