Would recommend if on budget

Best telephoto lens for a budget. I used it with my Canon eos r10 and managed to get great shots. In daylight, photos are sharp and autofocus is excellent. However, dont expect good lowlight results. Around sunset it can be verry difficult to avoid noisy or blurry images. My biggest complaint however, is that when I received the lens, some of the pins must have been damaged since whenever I take photos at the lowest aperture, I receive an unavoidable pop up warning. Other than that though, this lens has been the best investment in camera gear i’ve made since buying a canon ef 50mm lens.Lire l'avis complet...

A "must be" lens for every Canon DSLR (APS-C size) owner.

I think it's a "must be" lens for every Canon DSLR (APS-C size) owner. It's not the excellent lens, but a very good one to have in my bag, by the side of a 18-55mm or a 17-85mm, to cover almost everything I like to take a photo. Not heavy as a 70-300mm, with IS, quick and accurate in most cases focusing and good to very good image quality.
I have also the EF55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 USM, a good lens, without IS. The 55-250mm has almost the same picture quality, it's the same light and small, in addition has 50mm (50x1,6=80mm) more Tele and the IS facility, but it's not suitable for full frame cameras.
Not for miracles, but a very good "general purpose" lens, in a low price.

Worth the Money;

This lens performs on a level well above what its price suggests. Resolution is excellent even at the longest focal length. It is light, easy to handle and the Image Stabilization works well. I bought this to give to my grandson to use with his Canon digital Rebel, but I took it with me on a trip to Alaska and got some great musk ox, moose and reindeer shots.

The only thing I have found about this lens that keeps it from being a candidate for serious photographers is that the external focus allows the front of the lens to rotate. This makes it a nuisance to deal with when using a polarizer. Also, the dedicated petal lens hood rotates which may not be a serious problem once the lens is zoomed from its minimum focal length, but must be checked when the lens is racked clear in to be sure there is no corner vignetting. One would also hope for a bit closer focus capability, but at the price, that might be expecting a bit too much.

The lens ranks better in imaging quality than it's more professional and pricier ef-s counterpart in testing by Popular Photography magazine.

Great product for the price, recommend it for EOS!

Great lens for the standard Canon EOS cameras. The Stabilizer works great for slow shutters, but ultimately a tripod or mono-pod should be used. The Auto Focus works pretty good, but a the real value of this lens comes in the manual focus option. The rubberized ring around the lens for both adjusting focal length and focusing ring, are pretty well built for this standard lens. The photo quality is relatively good, being it as a kit lens. I would recommend this lens for anyone who needs a little more telephoto than the standard 200mm, but not breaking the bank either.

So, final verdict, I give it a 5/5 rating for the basics and design. Photo quality is good, and operation is ergonomic.

Great kit lens

Being quite experienced photographer (over 35 years) I quite recently became aware, that Canon can do very decent pieces. I have had many, many cameras - Leica M3, Olympus Pen, Praktica Super most notable cameras of pre-digital time and a row of digital cameras - Olympuses, Sonys, Fujis, Panasonics.
My previous DSLR was Sony Alpha A200 and I must say that kit - DT 18-70 was better then Canon kit 18-55 I'd used for Canon 350D.
But I'm tired of Sony cameras - just to see what cameras they produce now - A230, A330 - the worst DSLR cameras I've ever seen... (it is my very subjective opinion).
It happens for me to buy used Canon 20D, despite lower resolution it has much, much better images then I had taken from Sony A200 and I decide to buy a cheap lens in addition to main 28-135.
While I can't compare it with 28-135 as latest more expensive, I can compare it with Sony DT18-70.
1) Construction. Sony lens seems very, VERY plastic, even the glass seems as it made from plastic.
2) Building quality. Canon lens built well what I can't say about Sony lens.
3) Focus speed. Canon lens focuses in 0.1-0.2 seconds always, Sony lens focuses in 0.1-0.4 seconds, depends of light condition.
4) Image quality. Sony lens needs a closed apperture for sharp images, 2-3 steps from open, Canon lens is sharper then Sony lens from a open aperture.
Start with focus range 55 mm DT 15-70 becames very, very muddy.
5) Bokeh - both lens is not great in this area.
6) Filters - both lens make it impossible to use polarized filters because of rotating front lens.
7) Canon IS technology much, much better than Sony Steady shot - I easily could make sharp pictures with 1/5 seconds (EFR 80), compared with 1/15 seconds (EFR 80).

I must say, Canon did an excelent job to replace its previous 18-55 kit lens.
Must have lens despite its cost.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS Lens

This lens was created for the amateur/casual photographer who wants the flexibility of a medium range zoom lens, but doesn't want to spend over $1,000 on one of the big, heavy, "high end" telephotos available with expensive optics and Ultrasonic Motors (USM). Although the specs of this lens fall somewhat short of what you'll find in those costing several times the price, it's an excellent compromise for the amateur who wants a lens that can be easily carried in a small or medium-sized camera bag, and takes photos that are more than satisfactory for the amateur photographer.

I like the light weight, small size, and the image stabilization of this lens, and I'm willing to accept some minor (mostly imperceptible) degradations in image quality from what you might see with a more expensive lens. I'm able to easily carry my Canon 2Ti, the "standard" 18-55mm lens, and this telephoto in my small camera bag. (I even have room left in the bag for a small "point & shoot" camera that I carry for those occasions when I need a "pocketable" camera).

Yes, the lens is mostly plastic and not built as sturdily as its more expensive metal competitors, but the plastic means it's lighter weight. As long as you treat the lens carefully (like we treat all our expensive camera gear, right?), it should provide years of service.

Although photos taken (especially those taken at the extreme ends of the telephoto range) using this lens may not be quite the quality of those taken with the expensive lenses, the differences are usually not perceptible to the average viewer. For the price, this lens gave me the performance I expected and I'm happy with the purchase.

The Best Canon IS lens you can buy for under $800

This canon 55-250mm lens with IS (image stability system) is the best that I have used for under $800 dollars..I sold this lens to buy the (better if you will) 75-300 canon usm ultrasonic IS lens for $600.. in my opinion the only real difference between the $200 canon 55-250mm (IS) and the $600 canon 75-300mm (IS)other then the fractional (mm) difference is the price

You pay $400 more for a lot of little features that don't matter in general purpose SLR shooting but at the same time the cheaper (if you will) 55-250mm lens has a better (image stability system)and yes it is not as complicated as the more expensive 75-300mm (image stability system) but it works better

below are the pros and cons of the two canon lens

pro's for the canon 55-250mm

1.great (image stability system) up to 4 stops
2.good usable wide and zoom range for most users
3.good picture quality for any entry level CANON SLR (all EOS series)
4.good dependable lens
5.Great price for such a good lens (around $200)

pro's for the Canon 70-300mm

1.Good (image stability system) but limited to 2 stops for a high 300mm lens
2.very good quick focus for fast action and sharp picture (ultrasonic motors)
3.better build construction over all
4.a little better picture quality then the 55-250mm lens
5.a little better color quality then the 55-250mm lens

OK now here are the cons of these 2 lenses starting with canon 55-250mm

1.a fairly slow focus compared to the 70-300mm due to non (ultrasonic motors)
2.build quality not as good as some canon lenses
3.hard to auto focus in low light situations(the75-300mm is better in this area)

now onto the canon 70-300mm cons

1.image stability system is only 2 stops max (1.5 at wide angle)
2.well over $500 in price even used will cost you in the low $500 range
3.not a noticeable $300+ difference other then build quality for the average users
4.kind if heavy for the (eos series SLR) like the 450D,500D

so with that in mind you may ask why I think the canon 55-250mm (IS) is so much better then the big brother 70-300mm (IS)??? well it is simple both lenses are great in their own prospective the 70-300mm has faster focus, better build and little better picture quality but cost well over $300 more then the 55-250mm

while on the other hand the 55-250mm has a better image stability system and a better fit in smaller Canon SLR cameras while at the same time has compareable picture quality for the price.

For most of us we use our SLR camera 3 maybe 5 times per month ( you can only go to the zoo, seaworld, disneyland and universal studios so many times in a month)you want good pictures both lenses will give you that the primary difference between the two is quicker focus and build quality.. in my opinion the 55-250 is a better deal over all and has worked for me flawless over the year I have owned it and while i know the 70-300mm will last me for years I am dissipointed in the small differences that the lens offers for over $300 more then the 55-250mm lens

If you are reading this then that means that you are looking into the 55-250 (image stability system) lens and all I can say is that it is a great lens for the price and it won't dissipoint

Great general purpose lens

With a 35-mm equivalent range of 88 - 400mm, this lens does well for everything from portraits to sea birds in flight. Automatic focusing is very fast, and the image stabilization works well. In a typical Canon touch, the switches to turn AF and IS on or off are easy to use with your left thumb even while you have the camera up.

The lens doesn't weigh much, which might be a negative if you use it on a light body, but it's fine on my old 20D. Despite the light weight, it feels solid and durable.

Optically, it seems uniformly sharp with good contract and a very good "bokeh" at f/4. In short, it would be a good lens at any price, but it's an amazing lens for the roughly $200 street price.

Nice lens-covers a good range

I purchased this lens to go with my new Canon Rebel T5 dslr for nature photography etc. I just wish it was a 300mm or better but with a 2X teleconverter it will supply my needs until I can get a larger magnification!
The image stab. and auto focus is a nice feature to have since I am 71 years old and my eyes aren't what they use to be!
I've gotten some nice pictures of squirrels, butterfly and flowers so far. The zoom is smooth and the auto focus is fast and am well pleased with this lens! Unlike some zoom lens, there seems to be very little image sharpness loss on the edges like some other lens I have had!
All in all, I would recommend this lens to a friend!
