An Industrial Quality DV and DVCAM Player
The DS-20 will record and playback on two Standard Definition formats. One is the home user DV format and the other is the professional broadcast DVCAM format. Both formats used the same physical cassette shells and digital tape. The shells came in two sizes; the tiny mini-DV size most of us know well, and held one hour of tape, and a larger, three hour size shell that housed the same size tape, just three hours of it.
Both formats and shell sizes are playable on the DS-20. A later high definition HDV format using the same tape and shell sizes will fit into the machine, but the HD video will not play.
This is a commercial quality player/recorder, and as such, it has much more circuitry to clean up the image and make it look better than a home mini-DV player.
Almost everything today is shot on memory cards, so this tape machine is used mostly for converting twenty year old DV and DVCAM tapes to digital files or DVD disks. Since the DV format of this machine is only standard definition, the same definition as DVD disks, there will be little image quality lost in the conversion process. The only loss is the DVD has more digital artifacting because the DVD video is compressed much more than the tape format.
The player can output video in the IEEE 1394 Firewire connection, the S-VHS connection and a single composite video output, all at the same time. This means you can stream to a computer through Firewire while using S-VHS to make a DVD at the same time.
Another plus of this player is how durable it is. Made to be used in a TV station for many years, it's construction quality is much more robust than any home player or camcorder, and many components that are thin plastic on home devices are cast aluminum or stainless steel here. That makes a difference in maintaining critical tolerances for consistent tape tracking year after year.
If you can find one of these players in good running condition, it's worth its weight in gold to copy your old camcorder tapes to digital. The video is so clear that on a small 19 inch TV, it almost looks like HD video.Lire l'avis complet...

Doesn't playback.
I tested this deck on site and chose not to buy it. The intake mechanism is faulty, and when it does play the colors are completely wrong. Don't waste your money
