Not bad. Fit and finish could use some improvement.
Of the twelve No. 4 smoothing planes we purchased, one had a casting flaw and machining flaw in the frog adjustment screw socket which makes the frog sit way out of parallel with the throat. The others all need some typical sharpening and set up, so they are not ready to go out of the box. Paint chips on most edges of casting, but not critical to operation. They are nice in their weight (slightly on the heavy side which I prefer), the chip breaker is hefty and well flattened, the frog is substantial and machined accurately on most of them, and the sole is relatively flat and square with the edges (at least in the right places) and the throat is small which will be great for producing fine shavings. The totes are fantastic material and feel which was a pleasant surprise. If they replace the one blemished unit, I'll improve my rating. For the price, it's a known quantity, better than starting with an old piece that may have problems in the wrong places.

Great plane for the $$$ paid.
Worked out of the box. But, still need to tune in to get it better. Sole was reasonably flat, put no more than 3 minutes getting the outside perimeter and front to clean up, the area behind mouth is still dipped, I don’t care. Back of iron I spent 15 minutes getting it flat for 3/4”. Bevel on iron took another 10 minutes plus fine honing time. Cap needed 5 to 10 minutes to get it flat. I took the frog off and found 2 small burrs which I filed off. Put it back together, done. Works nicely.

Fantastic bench plane for the price! Very happy!!!
Hard to beat for the price! Cheeks & Sole are incredibly flat for a plane in this price range, & cheeks are a true 90 degrees to the sole. Tote & front knob are flawless. Frog is very nicely machined, flat, & frog screws seat easily & are snug. Throat is square and sole is very flat just in front of & behind throat-the most important spot! Frog bed is well machined, flat, & square. Good quality grinding on body of the plane.
