  • Best Inexpensive & Lightweight camera for Best images

The image quality, micro-contrast and color contrast/saturation rivals Medium format. That's reason enough to own one of theses Foveon sensor cameras despite their faults. The hardware used to take a photo is "stone age". Worst than the "Film" era. If they brought their ViewFinder up to speed and installed "Ibis", I believe it would be a Winner. Forget "High ISO" issues. This sensor is meant to be used like a Medium format camera.

  • Outstanding, distinctive, IQ - great for art and composition but not so great for P&S point 'n shooters!

This is a very different kind of camera and not one that I would ever consider for 'point and shoot' photography (i.e. quickie shots or flash photography and certainly not anything that is moving fast). I recommend that you do the research before you buy - there are several good articles and reviews ot there and, for nerds such as myself, some really interesting technical articles posted by Sigma on the Foveon Sensor and other technial aspects of the camera. There are a number of galleries to give you an idea of this camera's image capabilities. The Foveon sensor is revolutionary has the renders colors with remarkable depth and clarity reminiscent of film; this is the reason I bought this camera. As many reviewers have noted, image production is fairly slow; when shooting in the Raw Mode (which I recommend) the camera takes its time processing the image. If you buy a used camera (as I did) check to be sure you have the latest firmware, as it did provide a boost in processing speed. Slow processing aside, you will be rewarded for your patience witht excellent IQ. The camera really excells at low ISO settings - I generally prefer 50 to 100 ISO, maybe 200, but never higher than 400. Also this little camera has a large APS sized sensor, which contributes to its outstanding IQ. Back in the day, I used to shoot 25 ISO film! At high ISO, you will get lots of noise with this camera - so think low ISO and long exposure for low light situations. I find that the mindset I have with this camera is more like shooting film than digital, i.e. I am really aware of a differnt thought process that when I am shooting with my Samsing or Canon digital cameras. The controls on the DP1x are well thought out and can be accessed quickly. The 2 1/2 screen is fairly low res, certainly not like my Samsung OLED screen, but adequate for composing and quick review, which is all I really need on the camera. The build quality of the DP1x is superb - metal construction, nicely finished, solidly built, great feel. I like the minimalistic and compact design and find it easy to hold and carry about. I bought this camera primarily for artistic photography, including landscape and street shooting, and think it really excels in these areas. The 16.5mm lens is sharp, albeit not very fast at f4, but is an excellent choice for this type of photography. There is bundled raw software (Digma Pro); the current Version 6 is available to download and is improved over previous versions. The DP1x was released in 2010; I purchased my camera used (and well cared for) but new models are still available on the market at a reasonable price. The newer, Updated models, designated as Sigma Merrill are much pricier but, obviously more evolved. I found the DP1x to be a great starting point for my venture into the Foveon sensor and have been entirley satisfied with my choice. .

  • Do your research

By current standards, this camera is very slow without any outstanding fast specs. However, the colors produced by the sensor are lovely, and the back focus wheel is an ingenious implementation of manual focus. Just do your research and look at sample images from a variety of shooters.
