Sometimes Basic is Better
The abacus as it is made today has been in use for about 700 years. No, the abacus doesn't have the bells and whistles of today’s technology. However, these counting beads, rods, and horizontal structure make it a superior hands-on method for all forms of mathematical computation, from rudimentary arithmetic and beyond, to complex mathematical concepts. The beauty of today's abacus is that it easily adapts within the realm of childhood development. Toddlers to youngsters can develop hand-eye coordination that will be useful their entire lives. It allows young minds endless experimentation without the flashing lights and cajoling computer voices. Children rely on their own wits and wherewithal to figure with fun. The bright beads teach very young children to learn colors while applying the application of numbers. Technology is wonderful no doubt.
