The Voltaire was one of six Danton-class semi-Dreadnought type battleships that the French built prior to World War I. The ships were unusual in their mixed main armament of eight twin gun turrets (four 12-in. and twelve 9.4-in. guns) and five funnels. As such, this kit makes for a splendid off-the-beaten path display model. Fit of the parts is generally excellent and assembly, according to the instructions provided, is quite easy, though painting the ship correctly can involve a good deal of time. A painting scheme is provided, but some of the paints recommended by different manufacturers will have somewhat differing colors despite being listed as for the same parts of the ship. Three brass photoetch frets are provided for all the railing, ladders and funnel caps, which require CA glue (superglue) to attach. The turrets, while designed to be glued into place, can be made to safely swivel with a little creative engineering on the modeler's part. Additional detail parts, if desired, can be obtained online to replace the gun barrels. There are no rigging diagrams but the box cover and easily accessible online photos of this ship and others of its class should be sufficient for even the advanced modeler. Lastly, at its very reasonable cost, this model is a great bargain.
