Product Information

Capture remarkable moments in life with the Canon EOS 40D digital camera. With a 10.1-megapixel-resolution sensor, this camera produces crisp, clear photos in many conditions. The resolution will allow you to easily produce an 11 by 14-inch photo without having to perform any resizing or interpolating of the image. The Canon EOS 40D is part of the Prosumer line of Canon EOS DSLR cameras. Built with both serious amateurs and professionals in mind, the 40D has a rugged magnesium alloy camera body. The 40D is compatible with the entire line of Canon accessories and Canon EF and EF-S series of Canon lenses. It can use those lenses designed for digital cameras with the APS-C size of sensor as well as those for full-frame sensors. The 10.1-megapixel resolution of the Canon EOS 40D SLR produces files up to 3888x2592 pixels in both JPEG and Canon’s RAW formats. The camera can store multiple resolutions of RAW and JPEG files on a type 1 or type 2 CF card. Image quality on the Canon EOS 40D is excellent thanks to the Canon DIGIC III processor. In addition, Canon’s auto-white balance produces very reliable results. The automatic setting works well. However, you can choose the white balance mode you prefer or even set it manually. ISO settings run from 100 to 1600 with exposure control in 1/3 stop increments. The camera features 35-zone through the lens full-aperture metering as well as center-weighted metering and partial metering. Drive choices include single shot, continuous focusing, and both low and high-speed continuous shooting modes. A pop-up flash provides automatic mode and controlled manual mode with variable output. The EOS 40D SLR is also compatible with the full line of dedicated Canon EOS flash units. The Canon EOS 40D autofocus system is quick and accurate. The autofocus capabilities are built into the lenses, as is the image stabilization feature. The 40D can be paired with an 18-55-millimeter EF kit lens. A BP-511 rechargeable battery provides power and an available accessory grip can carry two batteries, which allows you to shoot all day. The accessory grip also adds a second vertical shutter-release button. The settings for the Canon 40D are controlled by a rotating dial on the back of the camera along with several buttons. You can view those on the LCD readout on the top of the camera and on the screen on the back. That 3-inch color screen also allows for live viewing of an image preview and also provides for image review. A dial on the top lets you set your choice of shooting modes. Those include program AE, i-contrast, manual, AE Lock, program shift, safety shift, and auto ISO shift. Rubber gaskets on the side of the EOS 40D cover the integrated USB port along with video outputs. You'll also find a PC port for firmware updates and one for a Canon remote release. Start taking high-quality images with the black Canon EOS 40D 10.1 MP Digital SLR camera and lens accessory.

  • Great camera with powerful features

Canon has a long history of making high quality cameras and lenses and the EOS 40D is no exception. While it is an older model in the EOS line it still provides a large array of shooting modes and features that are attractive to both the advanced amateur and the professional photographer. If you want to learn how to use a high quality camera at a reasonable price the 40D is a good choice. One caveat however, older EOS cameras may have reliability problems so be sure to check it out before buying one to make sure everything works. Repairs can cost more than the camera.

  • Excellent camera for advanced/pro users

Although this camera may be considered "old" by today's standards, the build quality, image quality, and ease of use make this my go-to unit for serious photography. It shoots in RAW format, so nailing the exposure in high contrast scenes is a no-brainer. Keep in mind that cameras are just light boxes, therefore much of the art of photography is in the eyes and hands of the person doing the shooting... Canon's 40D is an excellent tool that doesn't get in the way of taking great images. As long as the camera works, I see no need to upgrade. Used models are going dirt cheap, so the bang-for-your-buck ratio is through the roof. Highly recommended.

  • Super Value!

Great option for a budget minded photographer. It is a drastic improvement over the Rebel XT 8MP camera I've used for the past 9 years. It has a faster shutter, does better in low light, and has a larger display.

  • If your camera breaks, buy a "body only" camera and use your pricey lenses on the "new" one!

This Canon EOS 40D was a huge upgrade from our ten year old Rebel XTi version! The 40D is a serious camera that doesn't have the issues that the Rebel gave us (ex. saying it's "busy" when looking through the lens so that you can't take pictures for several seconds). So far the picture quality is amazing, though we haven't actually ordered prints yet. The picture view screen is a lot bigger, which is nice, and truthfully the Rebel looks like "Mini Me" compared to the 40D, but it's not too cumbersome; it just leaves you feeling like a genius for winning an auction on a serious piece of equipment instead of paying $700+ for a brand new at the store. In general, if you already own a nice digital SLR camera that eventually stops working, you might want to just buy the same brand camera (body only) on Ebay and use your expensive lenses that you already had for your old camera. Amazing savings and an upgrade to boot!

  • Brings the fun factor back into photography.

This is great value for money. The camera is ergonomically perfect. Has the look and feel of a solid, professional camera. The images have something of a "pleasant to the eye" tone about them, a very good capture of natural light. You can dive right in using the various program modes or venture out into the world of endless tweaking. Fortunately, there are a lot of online tutorials available on social media. Just a lot of fun.

  • Heavy duty construction superb pictures

The point and shoot capability is great. The automatic focus feature allows you to take amazing pictures. There are many features on the camera that can be a little overwhelming to understand but with some practice and over time, the capabilities are impressive.

  • Great camera but beware.

These are great cameras but the last two that I have purchased have had problems that are typical of this model after they age. First the shutter button can get to the point where you have to depress it very hard to get if to work if that. A factory repair is up to $200. You can fix with alcohol (either in the camera or yourself) with instructions on youtube but it is risky. The other is that the click wheel can start slipping. That too is an expensive fix but here again you can google this issue and find a solution using glue. Other that that these cameras take great pictures and if you get one without these two issues you are gold.

  • Good buy

Camera is fully functional, clean and in good physical and cosmetic condition. The shutter button is a little sticky, but not unexpected for a camera this age with 47000 shutter count. I would buy from this vendor again at the right price.
