This is a sturdy pencil sharpener. It will shave off the wood but leave the graphite intact and sharpen the point. It provides 3 different alternatives. You can have little graphite showing, or about a quarter inch of graphite showing or twice that amount of graphite showing. It's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

havent used the magnesium sharpeners yet but love the idea of keeping in survival kit to use in making tinder. seem very well made. not china junk.

Very sharp and nice long point magnesium sharpener
The three holes provide two methods of achieving a sharp and long point. The longest blade is a one step sharpen that does a good overall job and is fast to do. The medium length blade sharpens the wood only, exposing the core to whatever length is desired. There is no automatic brake, as is found on the Blackwing sharpener. The short length blade applies the finishing touch to the core and makes a very sharp point. There is a bit of a learning curve to get the exact sharpening you want. The blades are very sharp, but one drawback is that only the longest blade is replaceable. No extra blades are provided. The sharpener I received was very marked up with scratches all over it, and an ugly brown stain. I think the German army used it as target practice and then drove a tank over it. This ... This did not affect the sharpener’s performance, but sheesh already. The sharpener does not capture shavings, and that’s no issue for me. It is very portable and easy to take on the road with you.

Specialized Function, but Excellent. Read the review.
I think it is as good as it gets for this type sharpener. Most people will never use two of the sharpeners in this three hole sharpener because they are for such specialized purposes. One sharpens pencils to a very short point. The other removes the wood around the lead leaving a long lead protruding from the pencil. Unless these specialized functions are useful to you I suggest you buy a high quality single hole sharpener. The one made by this brand Mobius+Ruppert is excellent. If you are feeling spendy buy two.I think it is as good as it gets for this type sharpener. German quality
What is so special about a pencil sharpener; besides not being made in China that is? First on the list is it is SHARP. It also has the option of a non pointed pencil which is perfect for a wood shop. Last on the short list is this one is mine, and it is in a drawer close by. No more running upstairs to borrow my wife's pencil sharpener.

Solid Product
Pricey, but I like the fact that there is a choice between shaving everything, just the lead or just the wood. All other cheap sharpeners shave everything, but end up cracking the lead many times before getting what you want. You still have to be a little careful, but it works.
