1st Gen Philps Hue Starter Pack
I bought three of these refurb kits for myself and family near winter holiday 2016, and everyone is pleased (and quite intrigued) with them, and for the price, it's a good value. There are a few things to note however... 1. Third party bulb support is hit and miss. For example, if you search online you'll read that Cree Connected dimmable white bulbs are supposed to work just like a Philips bulbs with this bridge/hub. Apparently there was a firmware "glitch" last fall that broke third party support. Since then it has been patched, but the thrid party bulbs I've used still don't show up in an automatic scan for new lights. You have to enter a manual PIN, but some bulbs don't include one. That puts you in a position where you may be able to find a pin if you search long and hard online, ... So just be aware of this issue, and when reading whether or not a bulb will work, be sure the article was published in Nov 2016 or more recently. The 3rd party bulb support glitch didn't start until Oct 2016, so anything regarding 3rd party support that was written before that time is more or less null and void 2. 1st generation bulbs aren't super bright, and some colors are washed out looking, or look more white than anything else. This is a problem with colors that use blue hues. The blue of these 1st Gen bulbs is horrible. You can probably find videos on this issue, and I've read that Philips has worked to improve this with each passing generation (I think most current products are currently 3rd gen). But don't get confused, THESE ARE 1ST GENERATION BULBS AND BRIDGE/HUB, so be sure you're researching the correct item 3. While this bundle is a great value, I would encourage you to look at the prices of additional hardware, and compare that to other brands, and estimate the cost to reach your lighting goal with each. One of the main reasons I bought a Philips system, instead of one of the many others out there, was because Philips has a lot of accessories available (motion detectors, tap switches, ect), and according to many, many articles and blogs, is compatible with several other brands [relatively cheap] dimmable LED bulbs. However, as I mentioned, 3rd party support is lackluster, and the Philips branded items are priced at a premium level. So there ARE alternatives that are more open (rather than closed, requiring like-branded products) and cheaper overall in most cases. Where Philips has an edge is with their accessories, although that margin is closing rapidly as of late. 3. The official Philips Hue app (Android user) is not bad, but definitely lacks fun features that are readily available in 3rd party apps, often for free. So you end up having a few various apps for your lights, because they may all do one or two things that aren't available on other apps, like Color Flows for example. There are no options to cycle thru colors with the official app. It lets you dim bumbs or rooms, and chance scenes or colors, but there is no option to rotate thru the spectrum. If you want that, you need a 3rd party app. It just feels like Philips has pretty much decided that they will only provide basic functionality, and leave the bells & whistles to independent developers. And again, the "glitch" in last falls firmware update that ended third party bulb support (which imo was a beta test to see what type of reaction they'd get) has still not been fully patched, and third party bulb support is hit and miss. Personally, I feel like the flagship company in the smart bulb arena should provide a better product, on the software side. The competition is rapidly catching up, and if Philips doesn't watch out, they may end up being the Blackberry of the smart bulb industry!! 4. Worth a mention is that if you log into a Philips account, which is necessary for controlling the system when not connected to your local network (wifi), there is a long delay between when you change a setting on the app, and when the bulb(s) react. From my understanding, this is due to the commands being routed out thru Philips server, and back to the hub. THIS RESULTS IN A DELAY OF 5-10 SECONDS BEFORE BULBS REACT TO COMMANDS! There is a switch in the app to change between 'home' or 'away' connections, but it doesn't make any difference. Even if it's switched to "Home", for some reason it still routes the command thru and external server (as me tioned before, lackluster app development for a premium system, imo). The ONLY WAY to stop this delay is to log out of the Philips account from within the app. Then lights respond instantly, but you can't control them from outside the network/home, and features light geofencing (on/off based on location) no longer funtion. So, choose you're poison, I guess.

The white and color bulbs are great the old hue hub is not so great.

Some color on the bulbs are not what they seem. The blues are more of a purple color. Same with a few other colors. First generation him also lacks few features for ioT
