Tom Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a hotshot Philadelphia lawyer who has been keeping his homosexuality, and his AIDS, hidden from his conservative bosses. When he's suddenly and inexplicably fired, Andrew suspects AIDS is the reason, and is determined to fight in court, even as he is losing his other battle, against the disease. Beckett hires attorney Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) to represent him, but the lawyer must first overcome his own homophobia and fears. Director Jonathan Demme filmed this after winning the Oscar for SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. The amazing cast includes Antonio Banderas, Joanne Woodward, and Jason Robards. Roger Corman and Charles Napier, both in LAMBS, make appearances. Bruce Springsteen's haunting song "Streets of Philadelphia" plays over the memorable opening credits. This sensitive, moody film touches on a vast array of subjects surrounding gay and straight men, family, and death, without ever being maudlin or preachy, which is to its immense credit. An undoubted influence on society's growing acceptance of homosexuality, PHILADELPHIA reminds us how far we've come in that direction, and how far we still need to go.

one of the best movie ever
this was one of the best well made movie that had to with hiv and discrimination which is still going on today. In 2001 my partner who has hiv got very sick and the ambulance refuse to pick him up and had to drive him to the emergency. the hospital staff refuse to touch or bathe him which I had to go in and take care of him. I file on the care my partner received at the hospital and won my complaint. we did not want any money only an apology from the hospital which they did apologized. this movie has help a lot aid patient receive care and very happy this movie was made. very thankful and greatfull and the anniversary edition had a second disc that was more interesting how the actors got involved in making Philadelphia. movie is greatthis was one of the best well made movie that had to with hiv and discrimination which is still going on today. A powerful story of about a gay lawyer who is fired from his firm. When it is discovered he had AIDS he is represented by a fellow. Attorney who is more than just a little homophobic a great cast & oscar winning performance by Tom Hanks. Really makes this film a awesome, thought-provoking tale of the human spirit.
