I was able to playback also without a problem. I turned the unit off, but when I returned to test the programmed recording function 12 hours later I received an error saying no USB drive found. I tested the HDD on my laptop & found the drive to be perfectly operational. I could read all the files recorded onto it. I have 2 of these in my possession and NEITHER ONE works right!

This is a stand alone device that you can start recording a show by pressing the REC button and stop recording by pressing the STOP button. Can't get much simpler than that! Very pleased with purchase and would highly recommend this device! A+
