The Psion Series 5mx personal digital assistant is more than just a nifty gadget; this device is truly a marvel of consumer electronics engineering. When it debuted in 1999, computer enthusiasts lauded it as the most powerful and practical handheld PDA of its time. This was due to its hardware and software being designed just for each other. The original Psion Series 5mx remains a sought-after item, even in an age when so many handheld mobile computing devices are available on the market. The Psion Series 5mx comes with 8MB of ROM and 16MB of RAM, which is plenty of memory for producing elegant word processing documents for work; the word processor software on this device is capable of producing and displaying files that contain not only text but also graphs and images. The device comes with the EPOC32 operating system, which is also called Symbian OS, and is compatible with Windows 95 and 98 and all versions of Windows NT beginning with 4.0. The software applications included on the device include Bombs, Calculator, Data, Jotter, Record, Sheet, Sketch, Time, and some types of Perl and Python software. The device is capable of connecting to the Internet and browsing the web. You can also use Linux on this device if you install a free software called Open Psion. The keyboard of the Psion Series 5mx is a major factor in its popularity. Its QWERTY keyboard is just like the keyboard on a computer, except smaller, so you can type very similarly to how you would on a computer; the keys sound and feel very similar. The screen displays in 16 shades of gray. You can use a stylus to draw on the screen, which is backlit. Thus, the Psion Series 5mx is the best of both worlds for those who like using a touch screen for drawing but prefer to type on a keyboard with a conventional QWERTY layout. The display resolution of the screen of the Psion Series 5mx is 640 by 240 pixels. The Psion Series 5mx is capable of audio input and output in addition to its visual display. It has a built-in speaker and microphone and is capable of voice recording. At 6.68 inches by 0.9 inches by 3.54 inches and weighing only 354 grams, the Psion Series 5mx is truly a portable device. It can literally fit in your pocket as easily as some mobile phones, and because it gets its charge from two AA batteries, you do not have to bring a cable to charge it. The batteries last for about 20 hours of use. The device has an unassuming gray exterior that resists dirt and sends the message that it is all about business. The Psion Series 5mx is a timeless, handy device from the golden age of PDAs. It is the last model of PDA made by Psion, which was a major player in the PDA market. In many ways, it set the standard for what people would look for in handheld, computing devices for professional use. It is a reliable little machine with an easily readable screen and a comfortable keyboard for typing.
