    Product Information

André de Toth's remake of MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM is one of the first and best 3-D (stereoscopic) feature films, an alternative technology (like Cinemascope, Cinerama) used by 1950s directors attempting to compete with the new threat of television. Professor Jarrod (Vincent Price) is a devoted wax figure sculptor for his museum in 1910s NYC. When his financial partner, Sidney Wallace (Paul Cavanagh), demands more sensational exhibits to increase profits, Jarrod refuses. The vengeful Wallace torches the museum, leaving Jarrod for dead. Miraculously, Jarrod survives (though his hands and legs are rendered useless) and builds a new House of Wax with help from threatening deaf-mute sculptor, Igor (Charles Bronson). The museum's popular "Chamber of Horrors" showcases recent crimes like the murder of Wallace, a victim of a cloaked, disfigured killer along with his fiancée, Cathy (Carolyn Jones). When Cathy's friend, Sue (Phyllis Kirk), visits the museum she makes a discovery that leads to the horrifying truth behind the House of Wax. With gasp inducing (and tongue-in-cheek) 3-D scenes like the museum fire, paddleball man, and can-can girls, de Toth creates an atmospheric film which stands up as a horror classic in 2-D as well.

      • Classic 3D Film

House of Wax is the first color 3D film released by a major American film company. Unlike many 3D films of the era, the film was not shot in anaglyph (Red/Blue), but in a format that utilized polarized glasses – a technique similar to the Real3D films that have been recently released. A remake of the classic 1933 film Mystery of the Wax Museum, the film stars the inimitable Vincent Price as wax museum curator Henry Jerrod, who opened a wax museum in 1890s New York. His business partner Burke wishes to cash out of the museum in order to pursue another business venture (and a ditzy girlfriend), when Jerrod is unable to raise the funds to buy out his partner Burke sets fire to the museum in order to collect the insurance money. Jerrod is severely injured in the fire, but reappears to open a ...

      • House of Wax (1953) Bluray

House of Wax is considered one of the very best movies to be filmed and shown in 3D back in the early 1950s.... the bluray release is very well done, with plenty of extra features for fans of these movies.....this is great classic horror from the 50s , when movie producers were trying to compete with the (then) new medium of television...Vincent Price is at his very best as Prof. Jarrod, and the supporting cast deliver great acting performances as well...enjoy a great classic horror film !

      • Nostalgic horror

My father took me to see this movie when I was about 6 years old. I remember this movie vividly because it is the only movie I asked to be taken into the lobby because I was so scared. At the time, in the 50's, the 3D movie was a huge novelty, but it's a good horror story as well. A great touch was using the carnie barker with the flyback toy. It had nothing to do with the story line but for the time it made a great 3D effect.

      • The REAL experience!

I have only ever seen this film on TV. I saw it first when I was very young in black and white. When we got our first color TV, I remember being excited to see my favorite shows the way they were meant to be seen. I didn’t know at the time, however that many of my of the classic movies I thought I knew had originally been presented in 3D in the theater. Films like “It Came From Outer Space” were a true delight to finally see in 3D. House Of Wax is one such film! In fact it’s the one which started it all! What an amazing experience seeing this film in 3D finally! It felt so fresh! It’s a completely different experience! The release of these classic films in 3D format is the reason we are hanging on to our 3DTV! Well that and the fact that we don’t need or want to open up the can of 4K worms ...

      • ''One of the best 3-d movies ever produced - I give it 'two thumbs up'.

'House of Wax' is one of the earliest of the 3-d movies of the 1950's! To see it in 3-d is truly enjoyable and the special 3-d effects are some of the best I've seen. The 3-d movie has been out-of-print for awhile and difficult to find. I was so happy to find this one on E-bay which included the rare 3-d 'slip-cover' When I received the movie I couldn't wait to watch it! The movie and the 3-d were spectacular and I would like to tell everyone who enjoys 3-d movies - this is one they certainly should not miss! Pros and Cons?? - there are no cons - everything about the movie and the 3-d were superb!
