    SPARTACUS, based on Howard Fast's popular novel, is Stanley Kubrick's glorious masterpiece about a slave uprising in Rome in 70 B.C. Kirk Douglas, who also served as executive producer, stars as the title character, a man born of a slave woman and a slave master who has known nothing but chains his entire life. After being forced to put on a gladiator show--that almost leads to his death--for wealthy Romans (including a marvelously conniving Laurence Olivier as the power-hungry Crassus), Spartacus leads a slave revolt across Italy that soon has thousands marching on Rome. Meanwhile, he has fallen in love with the beautiful Varinia (an effervescent Jean Simmons), pledging his life to her.Douglas assembled a fabulous all-star cast for the film; in addition to himself, Simmons, and Olivier, terrific performances are turned in by Charles Laughton as the curmudgeonly senator Gracchus, John Gavin as the young Julius Caesar, Tony Curtis as Antoninus (a "singer of songs," with all lines delivered in a beautifully thick New York accent), and especially Peter Ustinov, an Oscar winner for his portrayal of the businessman Batiatus, who always wants to know what's in it for him. Blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo's melodramatic script and Alex North's thrilling, soaring score add a majesty that helps make SPARTACUS one of the finest costume epics to ever come out of Hollywood.

        The only movie of Stanley Kubrick that I can tolerate!!

        As a matter of fact, I more than just "tolerate" it... I actually like it... but out of the number of the films he's directed that I've seen, it's the ONLY Kubrick movie I can stand. The one and only. And if I like it... ANYBODY would like it!! Enjoy yourself... "No, I'm Spartacus!!"

        Kirk Douglas is 100 years old, our real quality actors are leaving us every year we see the real true Hollywood slowly dissolve and what remains ZEROS

        This was very captivating as a long time follower of Kirk Douglas movies I say this is one of the top five. I pray Kirk live another 100 years as we watch many younger movie stars kill themselves with drugs alcohol and crazy life styles we are refreshed to know at one time Hollywood was held in high esteem a icon of quality and role models with such as Roy Rogers Dale Evans, Gene Autry, Charlton Heston, we still have a few good ones like Clint Eastwood Jon Voight and Katherine Hepburn. Hollywood has lost sight today of touching peoples lives they lost the vision of truth honesty integrity replacing it with political trash and one sided views. I once thought about visiting Hollywood but I won't now I should have 45 years ago when Hollywood was great. I give this a 10 plus Kirk and the ...

        Classic of Historical Drama

        This is Stanley Kubrick's one "normal" film and it truly stands the test of time. Great script, characters perfectly cast, and well-directed. A must-own!

        script and cast were excellent

        Excellent cast and story. Older children could watch with supervision. It kept you ready for the next scene right to the end.

        I watch this great movie Spartacus.. when I was younger, & older...but this movie never gets old. That's a sign of a great movie, & I just added it to my video collection
