The Poet's Corner Review
I received this book recently, and although I have read only a little bit of it so far, I have enjoyed it thoroughly. The poems are poignant, thought provoking and unexpected. The author, John Lithgow, also has included well written and insightful comments after each poem, as well as introductions to each one and brief background on the authors. I haven't listened to the CD yet, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I recommend this book not only for someone who, like myself, has never really understood poetry, but also for its fans, who may especially enjoy reading Lithgow's comments. A corner we should want to be in
An outsider looking in, an actor from poetry-loving family has put together the best English language introduction to poetry I’ve ever seen. I’m so happy to find my old favorites here and also to be introduced to so very many new favorites, both centuries old and from mere years ago. This book is WONDERFUL. In a Huh-I-didn’t-know-that way, Lithgow gives a short bio and context for each poet, shares a poem or two of their best work, and offers brief insight afterward. This book offers a light/serious, happy/wow way to know about poems that can move us and deepen us. Well worth the cost
What sets this book apart for other books of poetry are the comments and insight provided by John Lithgow, as well as the included CD containing a reading of each poem by a professional (including John Lithgow himself). I have read some poems where I just didn't connect, and then heard a gifted reader read the same poem, and suddenly the poem made a great deal of sense. Poems are meant to be read aloud.What sets this book apart for other books of poetry are the comments and insight provided by John Lithgow, as well as the included CD containing a reading of each poem by a professional (including John Lithgow himself).
