Reviews
Seventy-five years later, No Longer Human still reads with an apt urgency. As the musician Patti Smith once put it, Dazai 'wrote at the pace of a dying man, yearning for ... the solution to an unresolved equation.', What I despise about Dazai is that he exposes precisely those things in myself that I most want to hide., No Longer Human is his masterpiece, though all his work is worthy. Dazai was an aristocratic tramp, a self described delinquent, yet he wrote with the forbearance of a fasting scribe. , Dazai's brand of egoistic pessimism dovetails organically with the emo chic of this cultural moment., From the point of view of wholesome common sense, Dazai's writings may be regarded as the soliloquies of a deviant.

Synopsis
Mine has been a life of much shame. I can't even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being. Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels himself incapable of understanding human beings. His attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a "clown" to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness. Still one of the ten bestselling books in Japan, No Longer Human is an important and unforgettable modern classic: "The struggle of the individual to fit into a normalizing society remains just as relevant today as it was at the time of writing." ( The Japan Times ), The poignant and fascinating story of a young man who is caught between the breakup of the traditions of a northern Japanese aristocratic family and the impact of Western ideas., Mine has been a life of much shame. Item was is great condition and exactly as advertised. Good value compared to other sellers. Mine came from India by way of Pennsylvania, so realize it may take several weeks to arrive. Communication with seller was great!

The book is exactly as described. Price and shipping were reasonable. Seller reached out about offering bulk shipping. Initially, shipping seemed to be a problem, but then became quite fast. I will buy from this seller again as I find other books I need. Pretty pleased with items received.

New book as described. I wish shipping information was better communicated. There was no update on shipping until it was delivered. The item said it ships from Pennsylvania but might have shipped from India.

  • depressing but good

good book. depressing, but nonetheless good. it arrived in great condition. i finished reading it the same day it arrived. it’s a book that really makes you think and i believe should be read more than once to really understand. but in the end i think there’s not too much that needs understanding. this guy felt he could not be classified as human. he was scared of humans. he couldn’t understand them. he wanted to die. the author after writing this book died by double suicide. he achieved his goal.

  • Heavy but a good read

This particular book by one of Japan's renowned writers where it tells the reader of the real Dazai's story through the fictional account of Yozo Oba, how he believes that he failed at being a human, despite his effort. The book explores the various decadences through humans and gives us a view of what can only be described as a dark era that went for as long as the protagonist can remember, exploring the negative aspects of being human, commentary on society through a glass that is half-empty. No Longer Human also explores themes that regard dark topics, on the likes of melancholy, depression and the nature of humans in general after Japan's journey through World War II, where the country was nothing but a wasteland of despair and some clinging on to hope, when it all they have left in ...

  • Even though it is written in the 1950s, this book is still relevant today, and not just for Japanese.

The translation is very well written.
