In addition to the Chevrolet Corvette C7 featured on the cover, gamers can race the Audi R8 LMS, Ford Focus ST, SLS AMG, Alpine A110, Shelby GT500, Ford GT3, Lotus Europa, Renault Sport, Volkswagen Scirocco, Audi Sport, and BMW Z4, among others. Most notably, the "Vision" project by Sony Computer Entertainment enabled automakers to bring concept cars and other one-off prototype units into the game.Players can drive on any track or course within free play mode, and they can compete online. Vehicles receive a rating based on their abilities, and only vehicles with the same rating can compete against one another. This helps make the races more balanced and enables players to find a speed and game style that best suits their tastes. Online play is vigorous and competitive with players receiving in-game awards and PlayStation trophies for their achievements. Free play and online competition is supplemented by a campaign mode that helps players get used to the different racing styles, competition types, and vehicle classes within the available options. Players also earn in-game currency to purchase vehicles in the in-game store for play and to compete in special challenges. Players can also unlock additional vehicles by buying them via downloadable content.
