Synopsis
Winner of the National Book Award The publication of this extraordinary volume firmly established Flannery O'Connor's monumental contribution to American fiction. There are thirty-one stories here in all, including twelve that do not appear in the only two story collections O'Connor put together in her short lifetime-- Everything That Rises Must Converge and A Good Man Is Hard to Find . O'Connor published her first story, The Geranium, in 1946, while she was working on her master's degree at the University of Iowa. Arranged chronologically, this collection shows that her last story, Judgement Day--sent to her publisher shortly before her death--is a brilliantly rewritten and transfigured version of The Geranium. Taken together, these stories reveal a lively, penetrating talent that has given us some of the most powerful and disturbing fiction of the twentieth century. Also included is an introduction by O'Connor's longtime editor and friend, Robert Giroux., Winner of the National Book Award The publication of this extraordinary volume firmly established Flannery O'Connor's monumental contribution to American fiction. Although this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.

I've ordered several items from this vendor now and they've always been what they were advertised as. This was no exception. Both discs were in great shape as well as their jewel cases. Delivery is good, packaging is simple but effective for what you're paying and I haven't had any get damaged. Will keep buying from this vendor because of the results so far and good prices, too.

  • An American treasure of Southern Gothic fiction

Mary Flannery O'Connor is an American treasure whose vast talents were only coming into their own when she succumbed to lupus at the age of 39 in 1964. She wrote two novels (one, Wise Blood, became a motion picture), and many superb short stories (31 in total) that accurately and unblinkingly "tell it like it was" in the Deep South of the forties and fifties. Her stories are poignant, astonishing, revelatory, and at times, deeply disturbing. Flannery had a profound understanding of what constitutes the "human condition" despite not being able to travel extensively due to the gradual (at first) progression of her illness. Her final years were spent in her mother's home in Milledgeville, Georgia, under her mother's care, but Flannery wrote some of her best stories during this ...

  • You just can't find a better buy than a great used book!

I am a voracious reader and have so many books I have yet to read. I love FLannery O'Connor's writing and can't wait to sink my teeth into it. The book is in great condition and therefore easy to read. I also love being able to find great buys on books that are in hardcover as well as paperback. Very happy with my purchase.

  • One of my favorite authors

In college, my prof said she wasn't that good. I didn't agree. Still believe she was one of the most amazing authors of my time. After reading the intro in this book, understand her impact on literature better.

  • Excellent reading

I had read one of O'Conner's stories in college and was surprised that I had never heard of such an wonderful story teller. Being from the south I could relate to many of the scenarios she brought to life in her stories. This compilation allowed me to explore all of her work, providing hours of reading pleasure.
