Great Value
These chisels were pretty sharp out of the box and had some kind of mild plastic-dip protective coating on the tips. It was easily removed during smoothing and the blades did not take much time to flatten, sharpen and hone. i tested them afterwards on hard & soft woods. They performed as well as my grandfather's Stanley's. Many woodworking teachers have recommended these to students and experienced workers alike, so I gave them a try. If you use your chisels often, than this is the set for you. If you can't get the famous brand name, these are for you. The fit and finish is great. They are well balanced, and have incremental sized handles which are solid and feel good. They really came alive after a coat of boiled linseed oil and a beeswax rub. Decent value for working with softwoods
These are well built chisels for what they are. They are softwood chisels. The handles on these are great, the fit&finish is very good on the wood and the steel. Their balance is good and they handle easily and predictably. However,... At 30* the edge chips and deforms easily on a hardwood like oak. (red oak) I questioned the 59RC rating at the time I purchased them, but thought I'd give them a try anyway. I shouldn't have. They come with a ~28* bevel which was expected, so I purchased an Atlin honing guide at the same time I bought these. I established a 30* bevel, and finished lapped the bevel on an ultra-fine ceramic stone after flattening the backs, which was easy. Like I said, they ARE well made and finished, but they just aren't made of the best steel. I'm going to re-hone the ... These are well built chisels for what they are. They are softwood chisels. I'm going to re-hone the bevel to 33-35* and try again, but I have little confidence in them working on harder woods. If it does work I will update this rating. If not I'll use them for paring only, and get better ones for use with a mallet. None of my tool steel (RC61+) chisels have this problem. They may get dull, but the edges come right back with a quick lap on the ceramic finishing stone. The steel just isn't good enough in these chisels for regular work with harder woods.
