Product Information

Trouble seems to follow know-it-all Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand) wherever she goes. This time it takes the form of Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal), a musicologist attending a convention where he's competing for a grant that will allow him to study the musical properties of certain igneous rocks. Judy pursues Howard despite his protests, and his overbearing fiancée, Eunice Burns (Madeline Kahn), begins to question his motives. To make matters more confusing, there are four identical plaid overnight cases circulating through the Bristol Hotel: one contains diamonds and jewelry, another holds top-secret government files, a third is filled with Judy's clothes, and the fourth, Howard's rocks. As the hotel detective tries to steal the case of jewelry, an agent hunts the man who holds the secret papers, while the last two suitcases naturally find their way into the wrong hands in this caper-of-errors. After a sidesplitting chase through the streets of San Francisco, the entire mess gets sorted out in the courtroom of a tense judge who just happens to know Judy all too well. Madeline Kahn's film debut, this madcap adventure is directed by Peter Bogdanovich (PAPER MOON, MASK).

    The Last (Or Most Recent) Of This Genre

    This film is very reminiscent of the screwball comedies that Howard Hawkes, Frank Capra, and others in the 1930s and '40s. With Barbara Streisand's unbeatable talent and Ryan O'Neil's understated performance, you can't go wrong. As impressive as that is on its own, possibly the most significant addition to this movie was the scene-stealing performance from Madeline Kahn. That statement is not at all surprising in hindsight, but given that this was her first film, it's worth mentioning. If you like silly, screwball humor, this is one of the best! If you're not sure, Google "screwball comedy" and watch some clips before you buy. While anyone can watch this G-rated movie, THIS GENRE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!

    Fun. Fun, and More Fun

    This film is a classic example of good family viewing, for all ages! It is full of hilarity while our hero struggles with intrigue, theft, mystery, and love, as many stories all fold into into one. It is still good humor after over 40 years. It is chocked full of stars with memorable characters.

    The slapstick, the lines, more great lines than I can remember, as funny as it was 40 years ago! Hasn't aged a bit, like those films with special effects. "YOu're ... different." "I know, STeve, but from now one I'll try to be more the same." "The same as what?" "The same as the ones who aren't different."

    An all time faborate!

    Hularious,, cute, adventerous, and so on. Depiction of scientists was absurd, but that seems to be par for the course in these times of mindless anti-science and worshiping stupidity.
