One of the more expensive NES games
From what I understand, Gargoyle's Quest 2 is one of the later NES games that was released after the SNES had launched into the market. As such, this game went under my radar back then since I was eager to jump into the 16 bit catalogue of games.
If you're familiar with Gargoyle's Quest on the Gameboy then you will know what to expect here. They simplified it slightly but not too much. You no longer have the option to search the ground in the over world map and random encounters have been eliminated. This is a fine change in my opinion as the only reason to fight enemies outside stages is to collect viles to purchase 1ups. You can still do that but it's now in your control by talking to a visible enemy as you travel.
It's a little bit harder than the previous title but like the previous game it's still a somewhat short adventure. Still, for me this was a must have. I love the Ghosts n Goblins games and Capcom's take on a Demon World is fairly comical. It reminds me of the Addam's Family where what is deemed acceptable is kind of malicious, like strapping your sibling in an electric chair for fun or playing catch with knives instead of a baseball. Nobody ever really dies or anything, it's just some dark humor.
I've watched this game go up in price slightly over the years so I finally told myself it's either now or never. You can buy a reproduction of this title from China for $20 if you absolutely need this game. I'm not too fancy with things like that, not too sure how viable those are in the long run, and to be fair I imagine this will be the only time I ever pay $100 for an NES game.
Great game, great series really and I have my doubts we will ever see a new one. These are the type of games that have kind of been left behind in the current video game industry with only indie developers making similar things. But you never know, Capcom did make a new Ghosts n Goblins after over a decade so I suppose anything is possible. Ghouls and Ghosts from the other side of the conflict
If you're really sick of playing Ghouls and Ghosts because Arthur only takes 2 hits to die, then maybe you'll want to try something a little more empowering. Gargoyle's quest 2 puts you in the shoes of Firebrand, a winged creature from the ghoul realm set out on a quest to save the aforementioned realm.
What is funny is that the game plays in part like an action platformer and part RPG. You move through towns and talk to zombies/ghouls/monsters to get critical information to move to the next area. Isn't that hilarious? You expect Zombies to just go "Brains...BRAINS!!!" but in this game when you talk to them they are completely civilized and cultured! This game is actually pretty hard. But when you consider the flip side to this coin is Arthur in Ghouls and ghosts, this game is a comparative breeze.
That's not to say it's easy though. This game definitely isn't. Firebrand even though he can float in mid-air for a time and use a variety of powers he earns throughout the game is not invincible. At first it only takes 3 or so hits to kill Firebrand. I find this curious because when you fight him in the original Ghosts and Goblins game it takes like 15 hits from Arthur's lance to kill him!
Firebrand being this weak makes initial progression in the game to be pretty difficult. Luckily there's a password system and you can look up passwords online.
You eventually level up your wing power so you can float for longer periods of time, and your life power goes up too, but there still feels like something is missing in this game.
Maybe it's that the weaponry that Firebrand uses even after you get more weapons is still limited. Firebrand also has no ability to defend himself. He moves SLOW, and I mean slow. The controls for Firebrand are clunky and disjointed as hell. Yeah, it's great that Firebrand can stick to walls, but there are so many obstacles, so many instant-kill spikes everywhere that it almost doesn't matter!
To be perfectly honest, I think Capcom was experimenting with this game. Now if you want my advice, I believe that the follow-up on the SNES "Demon's Crest" was a lot more fun and playable.
Alas, my final verdict on Gargoyle's quest 2 is that it's merely... average. I'm sorry Firebrand, but you're just not your namesake.Lire l'avis complet...
Another gem from Capcom
Capcom strikes again with a gem on the NES. The game follows Firebrand, a Red Arremer from Ghost and Goblins as he goes through the world of demons. The gameplay is pretty fun and the game is challenging. The price is a little steep but it’s not as bad as other games. It's a great game released by Capcom in 1992. The game plays like the original Gargoyle's Quest title and features many upgraded features.

This game is fun as heck, no other way to say it. Its definitely a hidden gem on the NES as well. Price can run high but that's because its rare.
