Product Information | |
It's a puzzle game Yoshi-style in Yoshi's Cookie. Join Mario's dinosaur pal (as well as the world's most famous fictional plumber himself) as you try to match cookies of the same type into rows and columns, causing them to disappear. The cookies will fall from the top of the screen, and you'll have to shuffle around those that have already landed in order to succeed. The different shapes of cookies are heart, flower, diamond, check, circle, and a Yoshi shaped one, which can be used as a wild card (or "wild cookie," if you will). The game allows you to choose music, round, and speed. A two-player option is also available. Instead of getting as many points as you can, your object is to be the first to fill the point meter. A handicap option is available to even the odds between people of different skill levels. |

Good graphics
Compelling gameplay
Good value
"Not even Yoshi would eat this cookie"
"Not even Yoshi would eat this cookie" For starters, this game is a take-off of a take-off. When Nintendo saw the nationally renounced success of Tetris, Nintendo wanted a little piece of that, so they made Dr. Mario. It was a good game, but Tetris had better music, better gameplay, and was just more original. This game is a terrible game, even for a take-off. What was Nintendo thinking? Graphics: 6/10 The graphics are ok. Yoshi and Mario in the opening look decent, but even Super Mario 2 had better graphics. The cookies are fairly bad, and the backround leaves something to be desired. I mean come on, Dr. Mario had better graphics! Story: 1/10 It seems that the factory is overloading with cookies! Oh no! Now Mario the Chef must arrange the cookies in straight lines according to type so they won't overflow and destroy the factory! Since when is Mario a chef (but then again, since when is he a doctor?)? This make absolutely no sense. I mean, since when do people hate it when cookies come falling from the sky? Control: 4/10 The control on Yoshi's Cookie is ok, but it controls just like any other Tetris rip-off. This time though you move the cookies which have already landed and rearrange them by the rows, which gets kinda annoying when they come down fast and you're trying to arrange it so you can get 1 row completed. They could've made this better. Gameplay: 4/10 The game is nothing great here. It's not just a standard Tetris-ripoff, it's worse than one. It's extremely boring and very easy. The only thing which makes me give it anything above a 1 is its addictive, despite it's lack of deapth or fun factor. Sound/Music: 2/10 The music is pretty bad. The quality of it is very low and it gets tedious awfully quickly. The sound is ok, but again it's low quality and it seems like this game was either extremely rushed or they just didn't put any work into it. Replay Value: 3/10 The only reason I can think to replay this game is because of it's multiplayer. The game itself is very easy, so what's left is the multiplayer, and even then if I want a good multiplayer NES game I'll play Double Dragon or even Dr. Mario for that matter! Overall: 3/10 This game could've been better than it is, an attempt to milk the Tetris-style franchise even more. It was a failure. Don't get this. Stay away from it. If you want a good Tetris-style game buy Dr. Mario. This just isn't up there. Forshame, Nintendo. Forshame... Pros: ok multiplayer Cons: Everything else
Yoshi's Cookie is a decent puzzler that's a tad more original than puzzlers
Yoshi's Cookie is less well known than Dr. Mario and Wario's Woods, mainly because, well, it's not that interesting. To its merit, it's not another falling block puzzler. In fact, this is one of the more unique puzzlers on NES. The objective is to create lines of cookies in order to make them disappear. You start out with a "block" of them, and new pieces gradually approach from the right and top. You play by putting your cursor on a cookie, pressing the action button and then moving the D-pad to either move the entire row of cookies left or right, or the entire column up or down. Like a Rubik's Cube, the cookies wrap around, so if you move a column up, the highest cookie will move out of the top of screen and re-appear at the bottom. After clearing the entire playing field, the next stage begins, and this pretty much goes on until you lose, as in Dr. Mario and other puzzlers. Should you get down to one remaining column / row, it won't be auto-cleared — because there's nothing to match them with. You need to chain at least two cookies together, so the only answer is to wait for new cookies to attach from the sides. Besides the main mode, there's little else aside a two player versus mode.
It's a neat puzzle game for the NES.
Fast-paced puzzle game. Very fun and addicting. Be sure to clean your cartridge from time to time.

Game options
This game is much like Tetris. Hours of good playing fun. The two player option game is a bit confusing at first and it is hard to figure out why the game does what it does. But all in all this puzzle game is great to add to your collection of old NES games.
