The move from actor to director can be a difficult one, but actress Helen Hunt makes the transition seem effortless with THEN SHE FOUND ME. Hunt, who also produced and cowrote the film, plays April Epner, a down-on-her-luck schoolteacher who longs to have a child. April's chances of bringing a baby into the world are diminished when her husband, Ben (Matthew Broderick), leaves her, and more bad news follows when her adoptive mother dies. The beleaguered April subsequently forms an unexpected bond with her real mother, the overbearing TV host Bernice (Bette Midler), and takes tentative steps towards motherhood with a new man in her life, the bumbling Frank (Colin Firth).Hunt's film, which is based on the novel of the same name by Elinor Lipman, is likely to win over fans of classic rom-coms such as WHEN HARRY MET SALLY and YOU'VE GOT MAIL. At its heart the film poses some thoughtful observations on what a late-30s woman goes through when she is facing a possibly childless future. But Hunt also stirs some generous scoops of humor into the plot, providing light relief from her central character's plight, and also demonstrating her range as a writer/director. The cast members are uniformly excellent throughout, with Firth and Hunt giving strong performances that are helped along by a supporting cast that provides most of the comic relief. Hunt even finds time to provide a small role for the writer Salman Rushdie, who plays a doctor. | |

Good value
Entertaining
Engaging characters
Not Colin's best film.
Matthew Broderick's character suited him; I've seen Bette Midler in much better productions; Helen Hunt is showing her age...as is Colin Firth...but the difference is, he remains very handsome, & very sexy. On the plus side: We get to see Colin portray very dark anger, & deeply wrathful indignation, borne of hurt pride & hurt feelings, to a higher power than ever before...& hear oddly rare-sounding obscenities spewing forth from that sensual mouth. A bit unsettling. The movie was slow-moving, but did have its tender moments, even sadness. I only bought it to add to my Colin Firth collection. Roberta
Title was confusing to me.
Acting was quite good but story slow in developing.

Too bad she found her...
I bought this movie simply because of Bette Midler. Such a shame. Her acting was stiff, and lacking the energy and vibrance she normally displays. It was almost as if she was being forced to hold back. The story dragged on. None of the well known actors could do anything to save it. Bette looked over weight and tired. Helen Hunt looked much older than her 39 year old character. Matthew Broderick's acting was less than desirable. All and all a sad misuse of some talented folks. I'm sorry I spent the money.
Then She Found Me
I thought that I would like this movie, so I bought it at some store and watched it. What a dissapointment. Midler had a small part, Helen Hunt was not as good as normally is and the whole plot of the story was so dull and boring. It could have been a good story but I just don't think it was. Not funny at all. If you must see it, I would rent it.
Helen Hunt should never try directing again...Terrible
Helen Hunt wasted everybody's time on this one...including her actor friends who helped support her on this bomb, and the audience who had to sit through this terrible film. Helen...please stick to acting, and please let someone else direct your films. This is a great example of an actor trying to do something that they know nothing about. What a waste.
