Director Mike Nichols's THE GRADUATE is the satirical coming-of-age comedy that became an emotional touchstone for an entire generation. In the mid-1960s, Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), a confused college graduate, is pulled in myriad directions by family, friends, and associates just days after receiving his degree. Seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), an older friend of the family, Ben carries on an affair with the married woman even as he falls for her daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross). However, Ben and Elaine's attempts at romance are threatened by the spiteful rage of Mrs. Robinson, who proceeds to hastily arrange Elaine's marriage to someone else, leading up to one of the most memorable endings in cinema history. With its striking photography and clever editing, THE GRADUATE established Nichols as a major director. The film also made a star out of young Hoffman, who gives an understated portrayal of the perplexed Ben--the actor's first role in a Hollywood film, which he almost didn't get because he wasn't Waspy enough. Outstanding performances by the rest of the cast are highlighted by Bancroft's sexy, embittered turn as Mrs. Robinson and Ross's endearing presence as the gorgeous yet innocent Elaine. The film's impact on popular culture is immeasurable: "Plastics" will live on eternally as depressing but solid career advice, and older women will never eye younger men without fear of becoming a "Mrs. Robinson." Buck Henry (who appears briefly in the film) cowrote the influential screenplay, based on the novel by Charles Webb, and the soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel remains a movie classic. | |

Nostalgia for the Sixties
To watch "The Graduate" is to be taken back to the 1960s and an era when Dustin Hoffman was truly of graduate age. A superb performance by Hoffman, coupled with an engagingly sinister Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft) and a fresh, naive Elaine (Katharine Ross) dominates a thin storyline that provides a special amoral version of the traditional boy-meets-girl-boy-loses-girl;-boy-wins-girl-back sequence. Hoffman succeeds in portraying a sympathetic character, while behaving appallingly, even by the standards of the 1960s. The viewer suspends moral judgment, suspends knowledge that the Golden Gate Bridge is north, rather than south, of San Francisco. Symbols replace reality as we watch Hoffman trample on all human loyalties - to parents, friends, future girlfriend - assisted by Anne Bancroft as an older woman who rejects any sentimentality in their affair. From the dark post-graduation days suddenly emerges the dawn of love and, hey presto!, we are sympathetic to the new Hoffman's resolve as he tramples on everyone else to get the girl. Virtuoso performances rescue this film from being an amoral farce and, in the climate of the times, it becomes a classic, a nostalgic peek at California in the days of flower power.
The Graduate
It's one of those classic movies. Definitely odder than I expected it to be, meaning some of things that happened I didn't quite expect. The reason I bought it is because it is a classic type of movie. The story of Mrs. Robinson is one that everyone knows or at least should be familiar with. I really enjoyed watching a young Dustin Hoffman. He plays such an, almost, innocent character but can't help being intrigued by the older woman. The only thing I "disliked" about it is that it's kind of cheesy. It's the classic kind of cheesy that you can't help but to laugh at it and enjoy at the same time. I didn't dislike that aspect; it just made me feel awkward. This movie definitely gave a glimpse into what was considered risqué is the 60s. Overall though, a great movie if you can get past the looping Simon & Garfunkel lyrics in the background.
THE GRADUATE
Hi: My new wife is 75 years old and I am 1 year older. We are both "computer Junkies" and after some discussion, have decided to start OLDIES BUT GOODIES, an outlet for seniors, where they can obtain DVDs with pre 1960 comedic material by the comedians who originated the material, which has now been remastered to be played on today's extra ordinary Audio Equipment. We had to build a basic inventory, buying in larger quantities, and your inquiry is a very interesting side-effect from this exercise. In this one lot we received, among others, the first 3 items that you listed, the Graduate and 2 Red Skelton DVDs. The first 3 I'll probably donate to some organization Some Senior in these United States is going to have a very enjoyable evening remeniscing about the Good Old Times. One thing that was really shocking to me is that people are playing games with the Shipping & Handling Fees. I have purchased a single DVD, with a S&H charge for as little as $2,00 and as high as $ 9.99. Keep up the good work and Kind Regards, Doug Anton 'Doug' Groot [Mylandau]
A better title could of been had.
Maybe revealing for those years but is more common place in recent decades.
