The sequel to 1993's FX chip-powered Super NES title, Star Fox 64 is a 3D shooter that takes place in outer space as well as on planet surfaces. As Fox McCloud, players must defeat the maniacal Dr. Andross and his henchman in order to restore peace to Planet Corneria and save the Lylat star system. Aided by members of the Star Fox team, Slippy Toad, Peppy Hare, and Falco Lombardi, players will pilot the Arwing fighter, a Landmaster hover tank, and even a submarine as they fight Andross' legion across 14 planets. While the stages normally follow a pre-set order, players will be able to branch out and take different routes through the system if certain conditions are met in particular levels. Gameplay is divided into two parts: 3D Scroll Mode and All-Range Mode. The former has players continuously moving forward, shooting down enemies and dodging hostile fire as they make their way toward the level's boss. The latter mode features an enclosed area where players are free to fly wherever they want within its confines, enabling them to attack bosses or engage in dogfights. Initially armed with a single laser and limited number of screen-clearing smart bombs, the Arwing's objective is to destroy all enemies in its path. Shooting a certain number of enemies will earn players medals, which reveal various secrets or bonuses. A lock-on target can be used to fire more powerful shots by holding down the button before firing. Additionally, power-ups can be found to upgrade the ship's laser to two new levels. The Arwing's ability to boost, brake, or roll (the latter of which can be used to deflect enemy fire) can also be implemented during combat. Each of the three wingmen has a unique ability, such as Slippy's talent for analyzing the strength of a boss by displaying its shield gauge on the screen, so it is important to protect teammates during the levels. If shot down, the wingmen will spend time having their ships repaired and are ineligible for the next level. Up to four players can compete in Point Match, Battle Royal, and Time Trial split-screen matches. Player handicaps and stages can be set prior to a game. Star Fox 64 is also notable for its use of real-time speech during the action (wingmen keep players updated on their situation as they progress through the stage) and for being bundled with a vibration feedback accessory called the Rumble Pak. When connected with the controller, the Rumble Pak offers varying degrees of vibration depending on the severity of hits taken while piloting the Arwing. Bump into the side of an object and players might feel a slight vibration, while a direct hit from a missile may result in an intense vibration held over a sustained period of time. |

Good graphics
Compelling gameplay
Good value
Amazing fast technical game play, never gets old. First release of the rumble pack too, must have for collector.
Star Fox is definitely one of the best games on the N64. It's got fast action packed gameplay that's easy to play, and hard to master, lots of nuances to get flashy with the controls if you want to. Still an amazing game to this day.

LOVING THIS GAME!
Gameplay - Star Fox plays surprisingly very well. I still can't get over it. When I heard about the all stylus controls, I was very worried. I totally wrote this game off as gimmicky, touch screen thing that will fail, but I was wrong. The touch screen actually makes flying easier and a lot of fun. The basic gameplay is broken up in to two parts, an overworld strategy map and full 3D battle maps. In the overworld screens, your objective is to destroy enemy fighters and bases, while protecting your mothership. It is fun to draw out your ship's courses and then preform the attack on the opposing force. During the actual fights, the stylus is your control tapping the screen to boost, break, turns, drop bombs and perform the famous barrel roll. Then only other button needed is the fire button which is mapped on everything besides start and select, so it is easy to find something comfortable. The control is very tight and it is amazing that this game just handles so very well. Also it is very easy to learn. Once you do the 4 training missions, you will pick up on the controls in no time. The multiplayer works the same way both local and over the Nintendo Wifi Connection and is very strong. In all multiplayer modes, players are only allowed to be Fox and are given just one ship. Some might think of this as bad, but I really like it because it balances out the game so much. I liked the wifi play because of an easy to use ranking system with 26 ranks, (Z being the lowest and A the highest) and good punishment against disconnecters. It is good to see that if someone drops, no one plays, which really prevents people from skipping out. Graphics - Best on the DS to date, period. The ships look great and the different stages have such high quality textures. I love it. Sound - I have said it before, I love animalese from Animal Crossing and I love it here in Star Fox: Command. The blaster shots and space noises are fine, but nothing beats the animal nonsense. It will make you smile. Plus it is a really cool option that you can import your own voice as the character's voice and tone.
'A must-have if you own a N64'
The games story is compelling and well put-forth. The action is simply and its best to try and upgrade your laser to the blue as the green laser just isn't very powerful enough. It's best to conserve your bombs for the bosses at the end of each level, but the bosses difficultly isn't to hard if you can remember their cycles and how each ones functions to bring it down. The only bad things about the game is there is no saving between levels, you must play through the entire game and face Andross to win, and if you restart the game or die without any Arwings left, you must restart at Corneria, the first level. Also, your teammates Peppy, Slippy and Falco can take to much damage and be forced to leave the battle, which if all 3 leave with too much damage on the second to last level, you will be all alone when you reach Venom, the final level. It is almost impossible to take down Star Wolf's team alone and even reach Andross, so it's critical that Slippy, Peppy and Falco's ships are ok before entering Venom. The game still gets a 10/10 in my book, from the nostalgic factor, to the EPIC soundtrack, voice acting, story and overall gameplay. A must-own for nintendo 64 console owners.

Your N64 collection needs it, period.
Probably the best 3-D space shooter of all time, and a must-have on the N64. Lack of saving during your campaign might disappoint some contemporary players, but otherwise this is a bonafide near-perfect game that has aged phenomenally. The controls are tight, the gameplay is fast and engaging, and the graphics are particularly clean for an era when 3D games were plagued by overly polygonal designs. Beating a level in a particular fashion will allow you to progress to another level altogether, and you can get medals for killing high numbers of enemies on a level, so the replay value is very high after beating the game for the first time. You even have a dogfighting versus mode for up to four players as icing on the cake for what honestly would have still been an extraordinary single player game. It's simple: if you have an N64, get it, and if you don't, this game may very well help convince you to get one. One of the all-time greatest offerings ftom Nintendo, and it's still less than 20 bucks for the cartridge.
