Every summer from 1904 to 1967, for 63 years, Riverview—the world’s largest amusement park—opened its gates to millions of people from all walks of life. For three generations, the Schmidt’s family park offered rides, shows, food, and music to men, women, and especially children. Riverview survived depressions, two World Wars, labor disputes, Prohibition, and a World’s Fair that threatened to take a great deal of its business. Riverview Amusement Park tells the story of Riverview’s growth from 22 acres and three rides to 140 acres and more than 100 attractions. | |

Riverview: If You Remember It, You'll Love This Book
For those readers who, like me, may have grown up in the Chicagoland area in the mid-20th Century, a summer just wasn't complete without at least one pilgrimage to the Windy City's mecca of fun, Riverview Amusement Park. In the era before enormous megaparks covered huge swaths of former farmland and charged gigantic entrance fees to match, Riverview proclaimed itself as the World's Largest Amusement Park, and even if it was hyperbole, to anyone who hopped off a Western Avenue trolley or parked in the adjoining cinder lots knew when they passed through the huge monument gate they were in for a fun-filled, affordable day of rides and attractions. Famous for its nickel-ride days, right up to its abrupt demise at the close of the 1967 season it had delighted multiple generations of Chicagoans every summer, and this book hits many of those high points. Typical of most all of the Arcadia "Images of America" photo-history texts, its 128 black-and-white pages pack in an amazing variety of photographs drawn from preserved park archives and collections belonging to both park owners and former employees to create a comprehensive montage of park development, expansion, decline and closure, from its roots in 1879 to its shutdown in 1967. Its photos would be meaningless without adequate captions, and it is there that the book excels. Again, in the standard Arcadia mold, the caption texts weave the story that ties the photos together; not always in strict chronological sequence but nonetheless in a fashion that ties each photo to those adjoining it and preserves the integrity of the chapter in which it appears. If the book fell down in any one area, it was in its failure to provide full closure. While the final chapter incorporated several photos of last-day activities, there was no coverage--sad though it may have been--of the park's demolition and reuse, save for a final midrange photo of a portion of the forlorn grounds after all park structures had been leveled and the ground cleared. For a book published over 35 years after the park's demise, a few more photos dealing with what happened after the gates closed would have been not only helpful, but a more appropriate ending to an otherwise excellent coverage. Having been a faithful park visitor for many of my younger years, the book kindled a firestorm of old memories; of picnics, of thrilling rides and forgotten attractions, of family outings, and lots of warm fuzzies in a nostalgic recycling of multiple visits past. Bought on the basis of positive experiences with other Arcadia texts, in that respect I was not disappointed. It's extremely difficult to comprehensively paint a detailed picture of every aspect of a major historical subject within Arcadia's limited canvas, but author Dolores Haugh, a Mount Prospect suburbanite and local historian, has managed it well. Given Arcadia's standard one-price-and-one-size-fits-all sales practice, anyone wishing a nostalgic photo tour of Riverview's 63 years of fun or 140 shaded acres--whether for personal wistfulness or to share with friends--will find this book to be twenty bucks well spent if you Buy It Now... or maybe a bigger bargain if you can snag it at auction on eBay. Riverview Amusement Park
I decided to buy this book because I have so many fond memories of Riverview Park. I was worried that the book just words, but was very PLEASED to find that it included so many fine and numerous pictures of the memories I hold so dear. I will always look at this book with pleasure, and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who remembers and misses this great place that once existed. It is a shame that it was torn down to make room for a housing development, due to the deteriorating neighborhood being overrun with low income families. That should have been included in the book also. I know about this, because I lived there during that time period (1958-1972). Truly fine book - BUY IT...
Love this book.
Great memory's.
