Conquer the Wild West as a former outlaw looking to make good. In "Red Dead Redemption" for the Sony PlayStation 3, the player takes on the role of John Marston as he attempts to bring an old ally from his outlaw days to justice. This third-person shooter has an open-world format, which allows players to explore and interact with non-playable characters as they wish. Since its release in 2011, it has become one the most widely enjoyed western-themed games available for the PS3 on a daily basis. The game was developed by Rockstar Games San Diego, the same studio that created Grand Theft Auto. The story is set in the early 20th century during the final years of Wild West. It begins when Marston's wife and son are taken hostage by the government. In order to get them back, he must undertake a mission to capture three exclusive members of his former gang. As players make their way from town to town, they must survive the harsh wilderness and hunt for food to sustain themselves. While trying to complete the main objective, there are many side missions. You can capture other outlaws and wily cheats, search for buried treasure, collect bounties, and store them in your inventory. The only means of transportation available in this game are horseback, stagecoach, or train. Much of the action of the "Red Dead Redemption" game for the PS3 revolves around gun fights. Weapons include pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles, lassos, and throwing knives. The combat system allows you to lock on to enemies before targeting certain body parts. In this way, enemies can be brought down without using lethal force. When engaging in duels, players can use the Dead Eye targeting system. This slow-motion effect helps you enhance your aim at crucial moments. "Red Dead Redemption" from Rockstar Games on the PS3 allows gamers to choose whether Marston will make good or bad decisions. For example, when working as a bounty hunter, you can choose to kill the outlaws or bring them in alive. The decisions you make will impact your honor rating. If you build up a high level of honor, townspeople will greet you warmly. A low honor rating will make them avoid you. The game remembers the choices you've made, and committing criminal acts can lead to bounty hunters showing up for you. The western setting in this game is finely detailed on the PlayStation 3, which makes for a very immersive gaming experience. While riding through the rugged landscape, you can hunt wild animals, including bears, bobcats, wolves, and deer. Shop at a classic western-style store. You may also encounter bandits and wanderers. The primary mode of transportation is horseback. There are a number of different breeds to choose from. By keeping the same horse for a long time, its health capacity improves. However, your horse can also be killed by outlaws or fall into a river. You can choose to buy a horse from posts or capture a new one and break it in via a mini game. There are also multiplayer modes that offer competitive and cooperative gameplay. In the free-roaming gameplay option, your group can explore the open-world setting, taking on whatever missions you want. Red Dead's main PS3 DLC is Undead Nightmare, a single-player add-on edition in which Marston must find a cure for the zombie plague. | |

Good graphics
Compelling gameplay
Good value
From a Gamers view
This is a good game, but it was over hyped for no reason. They talked about the massive free roam area, but it felt too small. The story is very short, just requires a lot of running around. Online I have a hard time getting people to join for the co-op missions they released, mic seems to drop randomly on this game only. I think the game came out everyone beat it, then stopped playing. It does not have much replay value, but one I plan to keep in my collection. I find the Uncharted games worth more than RDR's still over priced tag. I do have some more trophies to get from online play, but only missing 1 from single player story mode now. I may put it in maybe once a month when Sony has a day for playing. I found many glitches with the game even though the credits showed tons of play testers. It seems that Testers do very little work on just assuring the game works. They need a better team to find the below glitches. # Sometimes while playing Poker, the other people would loose all facial features and be blurred objects, then it would go back to normal. This occured after beating the game, but I didn't play many side quests first. # The people never layed correctly in beds. It didn't affect game play, but when I went into a room the guy is just floating at a strange angle above the bed. Sometimes I would see this of random people found out in the wild as well walking above the ground. # Sometimes I would get stuck in a wall or in an area that I should not have been able to get to (stuck between a house and wall with no where to climb out. # Certain areas I found I could harvest the same location infinite times. The flower patch would appear (harvest) then disappear, then reappear for harvesting again. Over all I think Rockstar should have spent more time in planning and development to make this title a hit seller like GTA series. The companies that go from making good games to rushing new titles are the ones that start to lose reputation. Look at Square Enix, they are buying out too many game titles and the games turn out bad which makes me check over a SE game than just buy it anymore.
Red Dead Redemption (PS3, 2010)
RDR is Wild Wild west meets Grand Thief Auto. The game has the same freedom style in it, do whatever you want, plenty of action, plenty of stranger side quests and you can hunt, collect flowers, buy/sell stuff, go on bounties, play Liar's Dice, Poker, Black Jack, arm wrestle etc. The main storyline is pretty long and even after that is complete there are many other things you can do, especially if you want 100% game completion (I'm at about 95 & and I been playing for weeks.) General List of Things to do include: Number of Main Missions: 57 Jobs: Horsebreaking & Night Watch (catch bad guys) at 6 loctions Houses for purchase: 13 Rentals: 2 Mini Games: Poker, Black Jack, Arm Wrestling, Liar's Dice, Horse Shoes, 5 Finger Fillet Main Gang Hideut Missions: 8 Stranger Missions: 19 Survivalist Challenges: 10 (flower collecting) Hunting Challenges:10 Sharpshooter Challenges: 10 Treasure Challenge Loctions: 9 Rare Weapons: 5 Bounties: 37 Outfits to Purchase/Unlock: 13 or so Maps/Locations to Collect/dicover: 94 Weapons in the Game: 7 Pistols, 3 Projectiles (Dynamite, Fire Bottles and Throwing Knives), 7 Rifles, 4 Shotguns, 2 Sniper Rifles, Laso Animals in the Game (general count, not including the different kinds/breeds): 39 (roughy) Hard Trophies/Achievements: 6 Catgories As you can see there is more than plently to do so you can't say there isn't enough to do! There are a few things I didn't mention in the list but thats most of it. Overall, I think this is one of the best games ever, if you are a GTA then you will most likely be a fan of this too. This game is made by the same creators of GTA so the controls/gameplay is very similar from GTA. Only cons in my opinion is the horseriding, it takes a long time to get to far locations, so for those I use a coach (taxi). Sometimes the loading pages take a bit to load. My ratings Gameplay: 10/10 Graphics: 10/10 Sound: 10/10 Replay Value: 9.5/10 Freedom: 10/10 Storyline: 9.5/10 (I didn't like the ending much). Overall like I said, Excellent game!!!! Hope this helps you.
Five Stars, minor complaints only
An excellent adventure game by Rockstar in the tradition of "Grand Theft Auto". This game really got me into wanting to watch old Western movies again. You really get into the world. At first I was frustrated with the different kinds of controls for things like duels, shooting on horseback, and various betting games. But once I learned, I really appreciated the diverse gameplay. It is an easy game to control and still requires a variety of game skills. My only criticism is that the world doesn't feel as large and detailed as the cities of Grand Theft Auto games. And you have to ride a lot to get across the map sometimes. But I was so addicted to hunting deer and birds that I don't mind! "Warp" features also make travel simpler.
Great Game.
The game is practically a Grand Theft Horse, so if you like GTA and cowboys its the perfect game for you, it has a pretty wide variety of things to do which is pretty rare in games nowdays especially using GTAIV as a reference. The game plays great, love the shooting and riding mechanics, it looks beautiful visual wise and the world is inmense and varied which i really did not expect. I honestly thought i'd be in a lame desert the whole time but no I loved it and finished it and started it again. I'm still playing it which is much more than i can say for other games like God of War 3 or Final Fantasy XIII which were the last ones that i bought and finished and have not touched since.
The game came out years ago, but is still fun to play.
I don't have to much time to play games, so I buy mostly used and cheap games. I don't mind being behind the times as the games are as fun now as they were back when they came out. This game was a pleasant surprise as it was still in a good price range, but very fun to play. I have been enjoying it very much, just try to pay attention to the tutorials as you only get one full explanation of each action and then it's hard to get any more reminders as you play.
