Good graphics
Compelling gameplay
Good value
A worthy Arcade Racer for NES - with real cars too!
Graphics The graphics in this game are very simple and plain. Most cars are do not have much detail, and the scenery is rather plain. But, on the other hand, it is nice to note that each stage has a car that is real and unique [to that stage]. For example, there is a Beetle on the first stage, then you challenge a Corvette on the second stage. Other cars include a Lamborghini, a Ferrari, and a few more. Most importantly, Square did incorporate parallax scrolling in the background scenery. For example, you can see the background separate in half and move left to right to accommodate the viewing position from your car. This is quite a nice graphical technique that was implemented, especially since this game came out in the first generation of the NES. Game Play This is where this game shines. You are given a choice to drive one of two cars. You can take a Ferrari or a F1 race car. Both cars run at the same speed and have no difference in actual game play. They just look different. This game may remind some gamers of Pole Position since the car handles like the one in that game - only faster, and a little tighter with a faster response. The brakes in this game are spot on, akin to real-life Porsches. There are two modes of acceleration. You can speed up by simply holding the A button, or you can hold UP on the controller as well as the A button. The latter is a pseudo-turbo-boost which allows to you speed up very quickly. The BEST stage to use this boost is on the third level - Grand Canyon. There is a LONG straight-away that lets you travel ultra fast and really makes you feel like you are speeding fast! Music This game has good music that is fit for racing. There are three tunes in all. One or two may start off slow but they pickup the pace into the middle of the song and make you feel like you are really advancing in the race. The sound effects are also fit for this game. They are simple and mundane, but effective. For example, you really do feel that you hit another car on the side when you hear the sound effect of *DAAHSH,* or that time when you will crash and send your car flying into the air *TAAKH TAAKH TAKKH!* I always wanted the soundtrack for this game but could not find it. Story The story is about you driving, and well, it gets interesting as you finish the game, and I would rather not ruin it for you. The ending is better than most racing games I have seen on the NES, not to mention most games I have beat, period. FUN FACTOR Here it is. This is what you care about. Is this game FUN? In my opinion, yes, it is a LOT of fun. It is meant to be an *Arcade Racer*. If you can take this game in that context, you should not have any gripes. The game engine is basic and offers no simulation or upgrade ability, and you do not want that anyway: you want fast, fun, and finish-in-a-few-minutes because you want to play an Arcade Racing game. The music suits the arcade style very well (it is fast and keeps you on your feet – or should I say, thumbs ;) - very nice for the NES) and the graphics offer a clean environment - play this game to drive for fun for a few minutes, or to get a quick rush of speed for those few minutes you have left for gaming. Closing Comments This game is Sega OutRun's equivalent on the NES. It offers what an 8-Bit Arcade Racer can offer at best and provides a great racing video game experience. Borrow it from a friend or pick it up for a few bucks and give it a try. It is one of the most-fun Arcade Racer's!
classic NES at its best!!
Rad Racer or red racer part 2! These games are a blast from the past! A must-have for any vintage video game collector player like myself! These games started all the role-playing driver games like today! And not to mention that they were so much fun and playing late nights to boost! Plenty of pizza and Coca-Cola to boot! With all your friends with plenty of sleepovers! Man do I miss the 80s and the 90s! There will never be another era such as! Enjoy and remember power to all the Vintage Gamers out there!!

Great racing game on the NES.
Rad Racer for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is a great game to have in your collection. When first playing you can choose from a Ferrari or a F1 machine and drive through courses to be the radical racer in the game. I think rad racer is the best in the early 3D racing category like Pole Position or California racing. I bought this product because I heard a lot of good reviews and wanted to practice for playing Nintendo World Championships. The thing about this game I like it is fast paced, something I want to back to playing, and the challenge to be the best racer. The only thing I hate is the 3D feature with the glasses. If you press select on your controller, it changes what it is suppose to be 3D when it is really a headache, painful way to play Rad Racer. Over all, it is a great game to play hand have. The game is similar to Pole Position or and other racing type of genre because it is one of the earliest 3D racing games of the 80s which is a classic. Go out and pick up a copy of this game and enjoy some classic NES gaming. Enjoy!
Rad Racer (NES)
Rad Racer is a classic that hails back to the simpler times of racing games. In this game rather than passing other cars to get 1st place, you just need to reach checkpoints within the time limits they give you while avoiding crashing into other cars. The game looks great on screen, and even goes into a 3D mode when you push SELECT (although after actually trying 3D glasses I realized the effect doesn't really work. Still, it's cool.) The fact that you're not actually improving your ranking by passing cars kind of makes this game feel a bit repetative, and it's a bit tricky avoiding cars that sometimes pop right in front of you when you're going over a hill. Other than that it's pretty enjoyable, at least for a while. Check it out on Youtube.
A Real Rad Racing Game
This a basic racing game for Nintendo. Using the B for brake and the A for gas, you race around the track. Obstacles in your way include other cars and light poles on the edge of the road. Stay on the track to maintain your speed and don't run out of time. There are checkpoints and your time is extended when you reach each one. The goal is to complete the track before time runs out. This is a classic NES game. I think it is one of the better games for NES. It is easy to play and very addictive. Easy to control the speed of the car and even though the other cars are sometimes frustrating, they dont take away from the game. Overall great gameplay. The graphics are typical of NES and I think the game is easy to play and simple enough that older graphics dont hold it back. I would recommend this game. Good choice for anyone trying to collect quality NES games.
