Charlton Heston may have portrayed Moses in The Ten Commandments, but you get to play a God in Populous for the Super Nintendo. Your goal is to eliminate from the face of your world the followers of Evil. You are given the power to command the forces of nature. You can create earthquakes, floods, volcanoes and other catastrophes, and you can even turn fertile plains into barren wastelands or oceans into fertile plains. Omnipotent as you are, there is a limit to your powers. It all depends on how many followers are at your command. You use these people to build towns, raise crops, multiply, invade the enemy, attack followers of Evil, burn towns and destroy crops. Once the forces of Good significantly outnumber the forces of Evil, you should call for Armageddon, a final doomsday battle. There are 989 worlds in the universe of Populous. Ten types of terrain are used, including grassy plains, rock and lava, desert and snow and ice. Three modes of play are available: Tutorial, Conquest and Custom. The Custom mode lets you change landscapes, jump to new worlds and set the computer against itself. You can even play the part of the Evil deity! |

Good graphics
Compelling gameplay
Good value
great nostalic fun.
I used to love this game as a kid back in the day. It's pretty much like a SNES version of age of empires but you can't really make war units specificaly 'cept for 1 knight but you can conjure up some devastation godly powers like flood, swamps, earthquakes and of course the end of the world itself where all the buildings get destroyed and all your units merge into one powerful unit and then dukes it out with the merged unit from the computer player. Good fun really. I loved sending my knight into enemy territory to go into their home kill the inhabitant leave and put the house on fire. haha very viking-like. as you progress through the game you'll be in different worlds and your buildings and units will look different. one i can think of is the candyland world.
Populous - A Prototype Real-Time Strategy Game
This is one of the first strategy games that allowed you to take on the role of a god in charge of helping a little civilization of humans. You can sculpt the land, train soldiers, and conquer other tribes on the planet. I seem to remember there being dozens of levels with varying difficulties and different landscape themes (grasslands, checkerboards, snow, candy land, etc.). This game has nostalgic value that shades my view of it because my older brother used to play it all the time. From the little bit I've played so far and in the past, the game stacks up to be a decent real-time strategy game, albeit a bit of a basic one. From what I know it was an idea of Peter Molyneux, the same guy who'd later come up with Dungeon Keeper, Black and White, and Fable. There is a sequel to this game, so I want to check it out sometime. If you want a real-time strategy game with 16-bit graphics that is a lot like a primitive Age of Empires or Warcraft, then this is for you. But apart from the nostalgic value, this concept has been refined a lot since this game was made.
Great game
Still fun after all these years. It holds up pretty well one of my favorite world building games.

Populous
Populous is a really fun game for people who like RTS. It feels pretty good ruining your enemies villages with swamps and then hitting them with a volcano right before your knight arrives to wipe out the rest of their men. Tons of levels I really enjoyed how they keep it fresh by having different environments as well as different enemies. You can find it pretty cheap on here and is defiantly worth the couple bucks for the amount of game-play you get. I would recommend it to almost anyone.
Populous
Great original game at the beginning of SNES
