The Greatest Film Version of a Classical Tragedy-- EVER
Nauseated by fifty-plus years of Hollywood's take on Ancient Greece? Think that Brad Pitt in a bronze cuirass is every bit as stupid as Tony Curtis in a mauve toga? Yearning for a Greek play converted into a GREEK film by a GREEK director starring GREEK actors? Iphigenia by the great director Michael Cacoyannis, starring Irene Papas as Clytemnestra, is the greatest film adaptation of a classical tragedy yet, and will probably never be surpassed for its power, beauty, horror and sympathy. Irene Papas delivers perhaps the most powerful dramatic performance of this type ever set to screen. Cacoyannis' direction strikes a perfect balance between theatrical blocking and intimate character cinematography. Kostas Kosakas is the Agamemnon you have always imagined, a rumbling thunderstorm of guilt and inner conflict. English teachers take note-- THIS is the film to show your students when teaching about Classical tragedy!
MGM WORLD FILMS SCREWED UP
This is an outstanding film. However, the gall of MGM World Film! How dare they sabotage Cacoyannis' masterpiece? After viewing this recent DVD transfer, I was stunned that the idiots who published the DVD took much liberty with the original film, cropping it on all sides. As a result, the long shots are seriously shrunk, the people in the full shots are most of the time cropped, and even more so the close-ups, which are badly damaged, giving the impression that Cacoyannis does not know how to use his camera. (Where is Criterion when we need it?) As a result, I give ONE star to this disaster of a transfer, which has irremediably damage this beautiful production.

It's a brilliant film on all points. Irene Papas is at her best in the role of Klytemnestra. It's a pity this film didn't make it big when if first caem to the US. A lot of people missed out big time on a truly remarkable artistic achievment.
