Mark Waters (MEAN GIRLS, JUST LIKE HEAVEN) directs this spin on A CHRISTMAS CAROL starring Matthew McConaughey as Connor Mead, a womanizing photographer with major commitment issues. Begrudgingly attending the wedding of his little brother, Paul (Breckin Meyer), in snowy Newport, Rhode Island, the caddish Connor encounters Jenny (Jennifer Garner), a former love he hurt in the past. He also runs into the ghost of his Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas), the playboy who essentially raised the two boys and whom Connor has tried to emulate. Wayne tells his nephew that he’ll be visited by three ghosts over the course of the evening: the ghosts of girlfriends past, present, and future. Reviewing his love life while simultaneously attending his brother’s wedding weekend leads to some comical moments as Connor tries to reconcile the two. He also has to fend off Jenny's potential new love (Daniel Sunjata) if he wants to win her back.McConaughey has the heartbreaker swagger down pat, and proves in this film that he can make any character charming. Garner brings a vulnerability to Jenny, who can’t seem to help caring about the roguish Connor despite her best efforts. Douglas is fun as the ghost of Uncle Wayne, keeping his 1970s swinger mentality while attempting to guide his nephew away from making the same mistakes he made. Meyer and his bride, played by Lacey Chabert, are an interesting casting choice considering how small in physical stature they both are compared to McConaughey and Garner--and just how much younger they and the rest of the wedding party look. Noureen DeWulf appears as Connor’s beleaguered assistant, and Emma Stone is amusing as the ghost of girlfriends past, decked out in '80s garb and perpetually stuck at age 16. | |

A Good Romantic Comedy
Matthew McConaughey (Fools Gold and many more) plays Connor Mead, a womanizing playboy who's philosophy in life is to make love, not fall in love. When he is invited to his brothers wedding he runs into his lifelong friend Jenny (Jennifer Garner) and the ghost of his uncle whom he has modeled his life after (Played by Michael Douglas). On the same premise as the movie Scrooge, Conner is shown his failed life by three ghosts. The premise of the movie is an old story and I was expecting to be disappointed, however it turns out that McConaughey and Garner bring a quality to the movie that made it entertaining. I recommend anyone who wants to see a good comedy / romance film to go ahead and watch this one.
Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past Review
This movie surprised me, yeah it had all the romantic comedy trappings but this seemed to have a message about the human condition. How our relationships mold into what we are. The take off on "A Christmas Carol" works more than I thought it would. If you like Matthew and Jennifer you already now what to expect form these two. It was a treat seeing Michael Douglas back playing Uncle Wayne the ladies man. It give this movie a 7 out of 10 on the overall movie scale but a 8 out of 10 on the romantic comedy scale. Most movies like this start off good and lose me towards the end, this one had me from the beginning.
Great Movie
Celebrity photographer Connor Mead loves freedom, fun and women... in that order. A committed bachelor who thinks nothing of breaking up with multiple women on a conference call, Connor's mockery of romance proves a real buzz-kill for his kid brother, Paul, and a houseful of well wishers on the eve of Paul's wedding. Just when it looks like Connor may single-handedly ruin the wedding, he is visited by the ghosts of his former jilted girlfriends, who take him on a revealing and hilarious odyssey through his failed relationships--past, present and future. Together they attempt to find out what turned Connor into such an insensitive jerk and whether there is still hope for him to find true love...or if he really is the lost cause everyone thinks he is.
Funny Movie!
I bought this movie because I enjoy Matthew McConaughey movies and thought it would be a good chick flick. My husband and I sat down to watch it (at his suggestion)and what can I say except it's not just a chick flick!! We laughed and enjoyed it so much! I wasn't sure how much my husband would like it but he laughed just as much as I did if not more. It is a retelling/retooling of the story Christmas Carol but it turned out to be very funny and touching (not in the weepy kind of way but more of a person does good kind of way). If you are looking for a funny movie that would be good for date night or just an evening in, this works well for that. Matthew is a cad but until......but that would give too much away. It is very funny - IMHO I believe you would enjoy this movie. I give it 2 thumbs up - and so does the hubby! :)
