Airing in Japan between 1972-1974, the popular and highly influential anime series GATCHAMAN is credited for spearheading worldwide interest in the Japanese style of animation. In America, GATCHAMAN appeared in edited form as the 1970s-era television series BATTLE OF THE PLANETS, the late-'80s G-FORCE, and the updated '90s spinoff OVA, but the series itself was never aired in its original Japanese format. This reissue finally presents the original GATCHAMAN in all its pristine glory: uncut, unedited, newly dubbed, and with 20 episodes never even seen in the U.S. Relive the adventures of Professor Kozaburou Nambu; his Science Ninja Team of Ken, Jo, Jun, Jinpei, and Ryu; and their superweapon aircraft Phoenix as they battle to save the Earth from the world-domination plans of the evil Galactor organization. This collection combines volumes 3-4 for episodes 13-24. | |

G FORCE!!!
Science Ninja Team Gatchaman! A Japanese attempt at the Superhero team, created by Tatunsuko Pro. (Speed Racer!), it totally surpasses it. Not only is this a beloved kids show but in lots of media after this, we find the basic model. Clones, before stormtroopers in Star Wars we had Galactor (Spectra), 5 guys, 1 girl, different colored outfits and vehicles all part of one, ninja technique (power rangers?), c'mon! I used to run home in the 70's to watch this and Starblazers, I have my Battle of the Planets Lunchbox. I looked this up, it says it was originally broadcast as Battle of the Planets, but I always remember them saying G-Force (which was in the 80's)! This is not a copy of the Americanized, crap drawing added, BOTP, but a direct English dub of the original series, with all the violence, killing, and hermaphadites... That's right, I know you remember that weird unmasking of Zoltar episode....But everything is here, the action, the Princess (Jun), her flashing panties, Mark (Joe) being a badass, even the theme song we alll used to hum, but with the awesome Japanese lyrics in both English and Japanese subtitles you too will learn Japanese!!! And all without Keyopps (Junpeis) speech impediment and 7zark7 (thank God!). What's even better is now we're older, now that kids know more, you can really enjoy the stories (and the deleted episodes that were too hard to explain), your kids will get it, (that's right someone died you sarcastic 9 year old), and it just seems so much fresher. The American voice cast does throw in a few 70's comments like "groovy" but it's almost an exact dub and really a very smart show dealing with global concerns, hell better than Captain Planet!!! Apparently the licencing is now in limbo so what's out there is either used or old storage, they do have the Battle of the Planets 4 disc set (i had it) just like it aired in the US. Strange enough, the same set also has Japanese dub which is quite different from the English version on the same set! But ADVs' version not only has awesome Alex Ross (a big fan) covers but is just so much better, especially now we're grown up. Definate re-watchability!!! It honestly makes me wonder if adults here in Amaerica really thought we were that dumb we needed a Hanna Barbera robot to explain things to us....
Perfect anime
It's everything you remember and more. All the 70's swagger and music is there, looking more amazing than ever. This isn't the sterile clean look of modern anime, this is all hand animated and chemically exposed film. The English re-dub is fantastic, the voices are spot on. It's also surprisingly self aware of it's own outlandishness, creating an engaging and humorous experience. Easily recommended to anyone who enjoys classic anime.
