Product Information | |
Northern New York State has boasted a prominent military presence since the War of 1812. Beginning in 1816 with the establishment of Fort Drum's predecessor, Madison Barracks, troops have trained there throughout the summer months and the harsh winters. Today, Fort Drum is the largest military facility in the northeastern United States, home to the 10th Mountain Division, a tactical unit deployed on missions around the world. Beginning with the history of Madison Barracks, Fort Drum depicts its birth as Pine Plains, a ten-thousand-acre training area, and its continued evolution into a military asset. By 1908, soldiers from Madison Barracks began summer maneuvers at Pine Plains under the command of Brig. Gen. Frederick Dent Grant, son of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Historic images in Fort Drum show these training camps and what are known today as the greatest military maneuvers in peacetime history during 1935. Today, Fort Drum supports the training of almost eighty thousand troops annually. This striking volume presents the military history of Fort Drum and the missions it continues to support in defense of the United States. | |

Many Memories brought to life.
This book has brought back memories I had as a child. Sackets is my father's hometown and Uncle Bob Brennan is my uncle and thru the years I heard many stories that I was able to piece together with these pictures. My Dad worked at Pine Camp in the summers he was in college and I can remember the brothers and sister telling of seeing movies at the theatre and playing basketball in the gym. I remember crossing Black River behind my Mom's home town of Deferiet to pick Blueberries not knowing we had crossed into Camp Drum. We were caught and were hurried back to the river and told to go home. This book is a must for anyone with ties to Fort Drum or Military Collectors.

Very Informative, lots of history and photos.
Bought this for a present due to having a relatives photo in it. Upon reading found out many things I did not know about and found this book very informative. My mother's has photos of the troops on horse back (Calvary) passing by her house on Martin St. when she was a child in the 20's. Two of her sister married a solder from there in the 40's and it took her back in time seeing all the wonderful photo's of that era. Great job on the book.
Great read
This is a great book. It brought back many memories of the time I spent at Fort Drum back in the 70's.
