Nathaniel Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER is re-imagined as a contemporary high school comedy in this tale of a scheming student who plots to give her popularity a boost by painting herself the easiest lay in school. Like most high school kids, Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) just wants to be popular. So much so than when her best friend, Rhiannon (Aly Michalka), asks Olive how her weekend went, the bored teen decides to whip up a spicy white lie just to make things interesting. But that minor exaggeration begins to take on a life of its own when it reaches the ears of motor-mouth gossip Jesus freak Marianne (Amanda Bynes), and in no time the entire student body is abuzz over unassuming Olive's unrepentant weekend of debauchery. Of course not a word of it is true, but that doesn't stop everyone in school from talking, and an amused Olive from deciding to go with the flow. Playing the role of the hussy to the hilt, the girl who used to be invisible begins dressing provocatively and turning heads in the hallways. The students aren't the only ones taking notice, either; Olive's English teacher, Mr. Griffith (Thomas Haden Church), is concerned that the kind of attention she's receiving isn't healthy for a developing girl, and his wife (Lisa Kudrow), the school guidance counselor, is in full agreement. The only people who seem remotely interested in the truth are Olive's trusting and open-minded parents (Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson). As Olive takes note of the parallels between her own situation and the plight of the SCARLET LETTER heroine Hester Prynne, she realizes that she may be able to manipulate her newfound notoriety to give fellow classmate Brandon's (Dan Byrd) popularity a much-needed shot in the arm. Olive never thought her little game could possibly have any negative effect on anyone but herself, but when loose lips start sinking ships all around her, she realizes that it's high time for the truth to come out. | |

Easy A gets an A+
'Easy A' could possibly be that breath of fresh air we all have been longing for from the high school satire genre. What we are given is a talented lead actress, clever and witty humor, and a movie that is a great addition to a line of high school comedies. Emma Stone gives a star-breaking performance as Olive Penderghast, a smart and genuine character that is portrayed as a wallflower to her fellow high school peers, but knows her way around the books. Her sharp dialect and personality is what makes her stand out from other leading protagonists. Her life turns out of control when she lies about losing her virginity and is overheard by the school's Christian dictator, Marianne, played by Amanda Bynes. From there, she uses the rumor mill to her advantage, and to others advantage as well, soliciting pretend sex in-exchange for gift-cards and a higher social status. Thinking of her reputation, she embroids a red "A" on her wardrobe to model off the Scarlet Letter, a book she is currently studying in English. 'Easy A' features an excellent ensemble cast featuring Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci as Olive's hilarious parents and Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley as Woodchuck Todd. Director Will Gluck accomplishes at bringing an intelligent script to life with striking and visual appeal of Ojai, California. The film also features an excellent post-modern rock and alternative soundtrack featuring Angus and Julia Stone, Lenka, and Sweet Thing, that helps the movie flow quite nicely. In the end, 'Easy A' is one of the biggest surprises of the year that is worth the ticket price.
Easy A is too true
After watching this movie you will fall in love with Emma Stone. Her performance is so real and engaging that I must give credit also to some great writing, which is rare in Hollywood anymore. Ms Stone also has the luxury of a very talented supporting cast. Amanda Bynes is perfection as the flawed, born again Christian. Lisa Kudrow does her expected, slightly unwrapped, and comedic character, and rest of the cast is right on point. This qualifies as a desert island classic.

Great movie - - - Well worth watching!
This movie was full of laughs. Emma Stone played the part perfectly, and was very believable in her role. After telling her best friend that she had been with a guy over the weekend in an attempt to get her friend off her back, Emma's character, Olive, gained instant popularity when the school's "Jesus Freak", hilariously played by Amanda Bynes, overheard and spread the rumor around school. "Olive" later confesses her secret to one of her gay guy friends, and together they devise a plan to help him also gain popularity, by pretending to sleep together, so the students won't think he's gay and will stop picking on him. One thing leads to another, and the "nerds" of the school guilt her into helping them out as well. Things escalate from there, but I don't want to ruin the ending for you. Funny for kids and parents alike! Well worth seeing!
Easy A (DVD, 2010)
Easy A is a frothy, fizzy, and funny romantic comedy for teens--and adults will love it too. Not since Clueless has a high-school heroine been able to delight both audiences, and Easy A's Olive (the sparkling Emma Stone) is a stellar young star. But Easy A benefits from a great script by writer Bert V. Royal and assured direction by TV veteran Will Gluck. Olive is a smart girl happy to stay in the shadows of high school, until her good friend, Brandon (Dan Byrd), who's gay, begs her to pretend to have sex with him so the rest of the school will stop picking on him. She obliges, but soon she picks up not one but two reputations--as the girl who sleeps around, and, on the down-low, as the girl who'll pretend to sleep with a guy so he won't be branded a virgin. Soon Easy A's complications pile up higher than the entrance of Olive's high school, and her two story lines, neither of which reflects the real Olive, take on lives of their own. There are backlashes and blacklists and repercussions galore. "I always thought pretending to lose my virginity would feel a little more special," muses Olive. "Judy Blume should have prepared me for that." Stone is accompanied by a strong supporting cast: Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as her bemused parents, Gossip Girl's dreamy Penn Badgley, the freshly unretired Amanda Bynes, Thomas Haden Church, Lisa Kudrow, and Malcolm McDowell. And it's to the cast's and the writer's credit that the audience is kept engaged, and guessing, till the very end. Easy A should be awarded exactly that.
EASY A
it reminded me of another movie , but this had a twist . She said she did things with guys for $$ or gift certificates etc . She figured no harm done ( in her mind ) by helping other guys get a reputation and she actually does nothing . Problem is she receives reputation for getting around . This whole situation turns into a love story at the end , Emma Stone is a great actress , I cant say this is a family movie but I am happy to have seen it .
