While many fighting games have you rescuing kidnap victims, "Double Dragon II" discovers what happens when the would-be kidnap victim is killed. Now Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee have to fight their way through nine missions to defeat the Shadow Warriors and avenge Marian's death. With multiple difficulty modes and cooperative gameplay, playing characters who are getting revenge is a lot of fun. This is a classic action-based Nintendo Entertainment System release."Double Dragon II" for the Nintendo system is quite different from the arcade game that shares its name. Developer Technos Japan made this game with the intention of having it play to the strengths of the Nintendo system. The NES version of the game features nine levels and uses enemies that are different from the ones appearing in the arcade version, with most of them also being different from the first game. What the two versions have in common is the control scheme, the main characters, and the plot. Even if you've played the original Japanese arcade release, the NES one is worth playing. The control scheme in "Double Dragon II" has been completely overhauled. Where your character punches and kicks is dependent on where your character is standing. For example, when your character is facing the right, one button punches forward while the other kicks back. If your character faces the other way, these attacks are reversed. Once you master these fighting skills, you are able to effectively get revenge on any enemy that comes your way. In addition, there are special moves you can perform by pressing a combination of buttons. For example, press both buttons simultaneously during a fight to pull off a spinning cyclone kick. This powerful attack decimates foes on either side of you. This sequel features graphics that have been improved since the first game. The character sprites are larger and more colorful. "Double Dragon II" has increased speed up ability, and the vividly colored backgrounds feature more details. This remains the case even when playing in two-player mode. There is also very little text that appears in the game. Most of the time there is just a line of dialogue between stages, allowing you to simply play. The game features three different difficulty modes, ranging from Practice to Supreme Master. The difficulty level you select impacts the amount of health your enemies have. It also impacts just how much of the game you play. For example, setting the difficulty on Practice mode allows you play through the first three stages. Meanwhile, starting on the Supreme Master setting lets you play through all levels of the game. While it was released in 1987 and comes in the standard gray NES cartridge, "Double Dragon II" remains an enjoyable game. Whether playing solo or with a friend, have a blast getting revenge against the enemy. This title is a classic in the eyes of many gamers, and after one playthrough, it's likely you'll feel the same. | |

Double Dragon Returns
Classic gaming at its finest. I don’t own the first game but I’ve heard it’s not as good as this sequel. This is a great beat ‘em up and you can almost feel the punches landing on those bad dudes. You can even get them to fall out of an open door of a flying helicopter! Be careful or you find yourself skydiving without a parachute as well. My only gripe is you don’t get to hold weapons very long, they are almost unusable actually.

Great game title to have
I’m glad I have the 1st & 2nd Double Dragon game for the NES. I thought the 2nd game was upbeat with the best compelling graphics. It’s also enjoyable if you play with a buddy as well. I recommend it! I definitely want to get the 3rd Double Dragon game soon so I can have the trilogy. Best beat em up ever!

Hasn't stood the test of time that well
I admit it, I really liked this game as a kid. Double Dragon 2 was so much better than the first. But recently purchasing it and playing it, it just feels like it hasn't stood the test of time well at ALL. By that I mean millions of other fighting games have come along since then. By and large they have all easily relegated Double Dragon 2 for the NES to below average status. That's not to say it isn't still fun, but Double Dragon 2 is not only extremely repetitive, but it's painfully short. Also, the difficulty will spike immediately and exponentially without warning. By this, I mean the ONLY way you can complete the game is if you play it on the hardest difficulty. You've only got three lives, and NO continues. For a game that really isn't all that fun, the lack of continues and the inability to get extra lives really sucks the fun out of the game for me. The lack of variety in the enemies also kills some of the fun too. I think it's hilarious that some enemies are exactly the same except they put a wig on their bald heads. You've also got a lot of places in the game where you can easily and instantly killed if your jumps aren't pixel perfect and precise. Considering there are 7 stages and instant kill traps appear as early as stage 3, you'll find yourself restarting the game a LOT. Double Dragon 2 the revenge was a good game for its time. It just hasn't stood up though. There are too many games today that make Double Dragon 2 look below average.
a real fighter
great game with decent graphics for the time it was released. the cover art is kind of cool too. I was given a fair price.
