Dark Chambers is a hack-and-slash dungeon exploration game in the spirit of Gauntlet. In Dark Chambers, you seek to explore a 26-level dungeon. The deeper you descend, the mightier the monsters and the richer the rewards. There are three difficulty settings. The dungeon is displayed from an overhead view. The scrolling screen moves to follow your character's progress. As you move through the chambers, you search for keys which will unlock doors. To move to a lower level, you must find a hole leading downward. Each level is populated by monsters. When a monster is shot, it mutates to the next weakest type of foe. The monsters include zombies, skeletons, wraiths, wizards, and grim reapers. The monsters originate from spawners which can be destroyed. As players journey through a level they may encounter power-ups and treasures. The dungeon also contains deadly poisons and traps. The game allows for two-player cooperative play. If one player is eliminated in a two player game, he may be revived if his opponent can locate a heart and shoot it. |

Not a gauntlet clone
Let's just get the whole clone business out of the way. Gamers have labeled dark chambers as a " rip off " or clone from gauntlet. That is not the case. In the early 8 ' s a clever guy named John Palevich created a game called dandy and the creator of gauntlet copied it. In which he later gave credit to dandy as the inspiration for gauntlet. Now on to to dark chambers. Dark chambers is an excellent title for the 7800. It has 26 levels and three difficulty settings. On the first difficulty setting ( beginner ) you will absolutely pass through each level without any opposition. Next difficulty setting ( standard ) begins easy enough but will increase in difficulty by the middle of the game. Finally the best difficulty is advanced. Advanced difficulty will hit hard from the beginning all the way through to the end. In my opinion though this is the most enjoyable setting. Tons of enemies more valuable treasure ( most cups are silver in standard but are mostly replaced by gold cups in advanced ). I've beaten all modes except beginner. First time I beat advanced I cheated a little. I played all the way through standard to aquire all the equipment and max out the smart bombs and allowed the computer to bump me up to the advanced setting after beating standard. The most enjoyable way though to experience the advanced mode is to start your game in that setting. As for the equipment I just mentioned there are four types that you carry. The sword which changes how many hits it takes to degrade an enemy to weakest form. Then you have a shield that reduces the damage you take in battle. The gun ( maybe a crossbow icon would have made more sense due to the setting a time of this game ) allows you to shoot more rapidly. Should you buy this game? Without a doubt buy it. It's fun it's two player and it's cheap. No 7800 gamer should be without the greatly enjoyable title. For a more in depth review check out " the no swear gamer" on youtube. He reviews both dark chamber atari titles. The one for 7800 and the 2600. God bless

Great 7800 game.
This is a great game for the 7800. I did not even know this existed until recently. It’s a dungeon crawler like Gauntlet. If I recall correctly, this game or the 2600 version was the inspiration for Gauntlet. It’s fun to play, but I’d use a better controller than the original 7800 to play it as you will need both buttons.

Great game.
The predecessor to the top down action rpg genre. The graphics on the 7800 version are a lot better than the 2600 version. One of the few games on the 7800 that I can play for hours.

Can you survive the "gauntlet?"
Imagine playing an 8-Bit Gauntlet clone on the Atari 7800. This game has an interesting origin story and its gameplay is still compelling after all these years. If you don't own it, track down a copy. It's worth it!
