The majority of albums had Explict Lyrics stickers all over them and the uncreative lyrics were boasting gangsta tales that the rapper themself never went thru.' Old school and true school emcees adjusted their best by stripping down their style and making the music they loved by with out the lights, wardrobe changes and gimmicks. Amoungst the albums that came out in this era was LL Cool J's "14 Shots To The Dome," Queen Latifah's "Black Reign," MC Hammer's "The Funky Headhunter" and DJ Jazzy Jeff + Fresh Prince's "Code Red."
All in all, this album did create a good buzz, but was swallowed up by the phoney gangsta tales by west coast wanna be's. Sharing the boards with DJ Jazzy Jeff are Pete Rock, Dallas Austin, and Teddy Riley. JJ+FP burst back onto the scene with the amped up party jam "Boom! Shake The Room." While it had success here in the US, the song actually reached number 1 nearly all over the world. JJ+FP did their part in promotion with the music video, interviews, and so on. But the song didn't quite get the support that 1991's "Summertime" did. The 2nd single got minor success with "I'm Looking For The One (To Be With Me.)" TV and radio didn't really attempt to back the single tho.' The 3rd single was "I Wanna Rock" and got even less support than "I'm Looking For The One..." did. Becuase of the lack of support, this minorly successful album falls into the category of overlooked classic Hip-Hop albums.
It opens with "Somethin' Like Dis"...a inpromptu styled straight Hip-Hop jam. "Can't Wait To Be With You" samples the legendary Luther Vandross and has R-N-B/Soul singer Christopher williams poppin' up on the hook. One of the stand out tracks is "Twinkle Twinkle (I'm Not A Star)." The production is nothing less than flawless. FP raps about his come to fame thru' Hip-Hop, TV, movies but how he and Jeff have managed to stay level headed. "Code Red" takes the album back to JJ+FP roots of comical story telling. This is one of those songs written so well that you have the music video in your head as u are listening to it. Taking things in a more serious direction is the track "Shadow Dreams." FP raps over a haunting Hip-Hop beat about beliveing in yourself and keep your eyes set on your dream. "Just Kickin' It" features the 'Prince effortlessly ripping the track over one of best beats thrown together in 1993. If you loved JJ+FP's "Summertime," check "Ain't No Place Like Home." This is JJ+FP homage to the fall/winter and holiday season. Most Hip-Hop acts would never take a song in this direction, but JJ+FP isn't afraid to show love to their family and where they come from.
The sound of this album is better. Most albums aren't this strong when it comes 2 prodution. Every song could have been a single. Props to JJ+FP for remaining true to themselves in one of Hip-Hop's greyest times. If you love Hip-Hop, cop this album. You'll be surprised.
