Konami's long-running vampire series makes its debut on the Game Boy Advance with Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. On a moonlit evening of 1830, cultist followers of Dracula prepare a ritual to reawaken their dark lord. Aging vampire hunter Morris Baldwin, accompanied by his son Hugh and apprentice Nathan Graves, storm the Austrian castle but are too late to stop the rite. Camilla, leader of the cult, has just resurrected her master. Wishing to regain his full power in one final rite, Dracula captures Morris. He then hurls young Hugh and Nathan into a deep pit within the dark realms of Castlevania. Hugh, anxious to find his father, leaves Nathan on his own. As Nathan, the next vampire hunter, you must survive the perils of the legendary castle while attempting to save your master from the powers of Dracula. Nathan carries the traditional whip and sub weapons -- dagger, cross, axe, holy water and stopwatch -- in his quest. Along the way, he can find new abilities, stronger armor, and other items from enemies he has defeated. Killing boss characters can often open up new pathways or allow Nathan to explore deeper regions of the castle. New to this Castlevania is the DSS (Dual Setup System) card-combining feature. Nathan will find cards along his journey that fall into two categories: Action, named after Roman gods, and Attribute, named for mythical creatures like the cockatrice, griffin, and unicorn. By combining one of eight Action Cards with one of eight Attribute Cards, Nathan can reveal a hidden power. Save points are located throughout the castle and can be returned to easily with the game's auto-mapping feature. The Save points allow a player to store progress, as Nathan will eventually level up and become stronger as he fights enemies. Only by defeating Dracula's minions and growing in Strength, Intelligence, Defense, and Luck will he become strong enough to defeat the Lord of Darkness himself. |

Good graphics
Compelling gameplay
Good value
Not a terrible game but not a good Castlevania game
As far as post Super Castlevania 4 games go, this is a bit terrible. It's easily my least favorite of the 3 available on the GBA. The parallax scrolling is limited to only one background, character animation is choppy, movement is sluggish until you find the power up that ALLOWS you to run and then you have to deal with a directional double tap anytime you want to run. The magic/card/DSS system is lackluster. Most of the cards and their effects are garbage. You'll end up sticking with only one or two card combinations and never using the others as they're either pointlessly weak, use too much MP or are ridiculously slow. There's just no balance in the system to actual make it useful. The difficulty spikes are pretty bad and you'll spend quite a bit of time grinding away baddies to level/catch up. This isn't a terrible game, it's just not a great Castlevania game.

Positives and Negatives
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon is a challanging yet fun game. One of Dracula's followers, Camillia, has resurrected Dracula and you are Nathan, trying to save your master from Dracula's grasp. At the same time your trying to find him, you have a rivary of a jealous 'friend' named Hugh. Positives of game: Challanging Fun HUGE map Unique bosses Good story line I love this game! Negatives of game: The map is so huge that it is so easy to get lost Some enemies are so cheap that it gets you mad It's a hard game It's gory (negative to some people) Graphics aare old school (negative to some people) Now, this game is rated T for a reason - this game is gory (bloody) and can be scary to some people, including the enemies. The graphics are old school which some people hate. I believe this game is for the age 12 and up and I think it is worth buying. Hope this review helped! This is darks, have a great day.
The Best Castlevania game?
This was actually my First game that got me into the Castlevania franchise and it does not disappoint. You play as Nathan Graves to try and stop the newly revived Dracula from regaining his full power and destroying the world. The gameplay is you're standard Metroidvania 2D platformer and throughout the game you collect these cards that form the Dual system service. When the cards are combined you can use magic to power up your whip, form a protective barrier, boost stats, and even summon familiars. Probably my favorite Castlevania game and the best for Handheld.

Old School Castlevania? Or just Old?
I've only just started playing this game, and let me just say this. IT'S HARD. The controls aren't that good, and with this being the first game on the GBA (before all the other, obviously better GBA and DS versions), you can see lots of need for improvement. I died a few times on the first boss before finding a pattern to beat him with, and the save points are also few and far between. I don't have any idea where I can get potions other than beating bad guys (and that's true of any other item. I don't see where I will actually be able to buy/sell anything anytime soon). But don't get me wrong. I'm kind of getting bored of all the mollycoddling and hand holding that games do for you these days. Other Castlevania games have forced the player to adapt and play by their rules instead of cheating their way through the game, and this is no different. For a Castlevania completionist, this game is a must, however if you're just getting into Castlevania, I'd recommend starting with Aria of Sorrow, Harmony of Dissonance, Dawn of Sorrow, and Order of Ecclesia. Each game tends to outdo the last, but it helps to know what had to happen first (as in what failures and mistakes in past games had to be made) in order for the games of today to become so amazing in both gameplay and graphics.
Looking for a CLASSIC?
This is the first Castlevania game released for the Gameboy Advance. It offers hours of gameplay as you scour the castle of the famous Dracula searching for power ups and key items to free your captured master and defeat the king of darkness. The game truly offers hours of play with great animation. THE BIGGEST COMPLAINT is how dark some of the pixels show up on screen of the original Gameboy Advance, if your playing and an SP or DS or even the Gamecube Gameboy Player, there is no problem and you will enjoy the animation better The music is some of the best in games, it creates great atmosphere, has a fun story, memoriable boss fights and is the only game to offer a new way of fighting, the DDS magic system allows you to combine effect to create your own magic attack and allows your own custom way of beating the game over and over again A MUST for any Castlevania fan. A MUST for fans of 2-D side scroller, Metroid fasion DONE RIGHT!!!
