Good image quality
takes me back to the good old days when you had to know what you were doing...
Bought my first Canon in 1972; bought my first pro Canon in 1978 or so - top of the line F-1. have had many in between. Then retired and went light and economical and stupid. Now I am back to a pro model with the 5D Mark 2, along with an L lens, and wondering what the hell took me so long. Heavy as hell when coupled with the 24-105 L lens, but full-frame is unparalleled. "You get what you pay for." This thing is no-frills, i.e., it does not provide all those asinine little icons that purport to do the work for you; "Cameras for Dummies." I finally got sick of all that static and nonsense. THIS is a camera. But for SERIOUS photographers who want high image qualities, and know the difference between f/stops and stop signs. Controls are amazingly elegant and simple; more is less. If we weren't married to the damned batteries in our cameras - didn't need them with my old F-1 (which still works perfectly), it would be perfect. But stay away if you use "AUTO" most of the time. You'll be wasting your money. This one begs to be used on manual.

A professional camera for the amateur photographer!
Awesome camera. Upgraded from a EOS 500D and this feels like shooting a camera for the first time. The body is solid, the viewfinder is bright and big, and coverage is very good as well. Shooting full frame is a bit of a learning curve at first but once you get a feel for how your lenses perform it's quite enjoyable. The DOF is more narrow than with APS-C. This camera is fantastic for portrait work. The tracking and AF are a bit slow but who cares unless you're a sports shooter. Color rendition and metering are excellent. I'm able to get some fantastic looking portraits with a simple one-light umbrella and this camera. Landscapes are great too, although highlight range is limited compared to current Nikon and Sony models. This camera DOES have a high DR option(called HTP or highlight tone priority), but you can only shoot from ISO 200-6400. You also lose a little bit of definition in the shadows, but there is a way to get it all- turn on HTP, and expose for about 2/3 to a full stop brighter. Highlights are well preserved and the shadows aren't so dark that they are noisy. If you shoot JPEGs this probably isn't viable, but you won't be doing a lot of post processing anyway (at least like you would with RAW) so you can leave HTP on with 0 EV comp. and still have highlight detail that would otherwise be blown out. Usability is good, controls are easy and intuitive, although some of the menu items are hidden pretty well (but you can customize them to a favorites tab). I wish Canon was better about making firmware updates, or allowing 3rd parties to easily mod the OS. I'd love to be able to set up auto-shooting for time lapse videos, or at a minimum have an adjustable timer for longer than 30sec exposures. I'd like more than 2 stop exposure bracketing too, but probably wouldn't use it very often. Maybe all cameras will run on open source code one day?
Great for starting out
I did not want to spend money on a new full frame after just having a crop sensor, so this was the perfect upgrade for me. The image quality is great and low light shooting is a breeze. It’s still very much a relevant camera even though it’s not the newest. Definitely recommend to people upgrading to their first full frame.

Great lowlight capability.
great image quality even in low light, the battery grip gives it a very professional look and feel. love the fact that I will be able to shoot tethered to my laptop using Lightroom, wish I would have purchased one sooner.

Freaking Amazing but be prepared to work
I am a filmmaker/videographer and I bought this primarily for the video function. The picture quality is unbelievable! The only reason I'm not giving this an "excellent" rating is due to the fact that there is no manual control for video. If you wish for any sort of control, go and buy manual Canon FD lenses, or Nikon, or whatever manual lens you can find. You'll need an adapter to attach it, like the FD to EF that I got. Once you do that, go on vimeo.com and search for the 5D MarkII tutorials, so you'll learn how to trick your camera into doing what you want. After you master these simple things, you will get amazingly awesome footage out of this camera! And if you're planning on using audio, be prepared to pretend that you're shooting on film because you'll be spending some time in post syncing sound. If you're still not scared off by all these hurdles, then buy this camera!
