Harvey Pekar, the hilariously downtrodden Cleveland comic book artist, is the subject of AMERICAN SPLENDOR, titled after Pekar's autobiographical series. Played by actor Paul Giamatti, Pekar also appears as himself, giving the film a documentary feeling with many behind-the-scenes on-set shots. Directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini maintain this balance between the actors and the real-life characters--Pekar's wife Joyce and coworker Toby also appear on set as themselves--while crafting a funny, difficult, heartwarming tale that encapsulates Pekar's life, work, and uniquely bizarre perspectives.Pekar is a pessimistic file clerk with no hope of ever rising above his boring job, slobbish apartment, and bad attitude. Wonderfully set in his ways, Pekar's constant self-deprication is clearly a front for his prolific interests in music and art. When his friend Robert Crumb (James Urbaniak) gets his big break as a comic book artist, Pekar decides to try his hand at the craft. Though he can't illustrate, his stories are good, and Crumb agrees to help draw the pictures. Soon several artists are illustrating Pekar's American Splendor series, and the comic book's readership grows. The film continues through the events of Pekar's life--meeting wife Joyce Brabner, appearing on David Letterman, struggling with cancer, and adopting a daughter--always showing Pekar's no-frills approach to life. A creative and punchy film, AMERICAN SPLENDOR invites viewers into the odd world of Pekar and his comic-book antihero persona. | |

Not great
I generally expect great things from Paul Giamati. He is one of my favorite actors. This movie was basically a documentary with Giamatti acting out various scenes of the subjects life. It was casual to a fault and not terribly watchable. The subject is a famous cartoonist who was friends with and made famous by cartoonist Robert Crumb. There was an award winning documentary made of him some years ago that I highly recommend.

Great DVD in great shape
This used DVD of the 2004 American Splendor film came in excellent condition: no scratches on disc, intact cover, and complete inserts (includes an actual mini comic book that is relevant to the film). I was very happy with it. I had been looking for this film for a friend who adores it and was about to have a birthday. And I preferred a good used version to a new one (recycling!) It is a very original, endearing film that I also love. So innovative and interesting plus superb acting - I can see why it was awarded a top award at Cannes. In addition, the DVD version has many interesting extras for any true lover of this film. If you are looking for something different, funny, full of pathos and are a lover of the comics and/or jazz, you might really enjoy this DVD.
Great Autobiographical Tale of the Cult Comic Creator
Oscar Nominee Paul Giamatti(Cinderella Man)skillfully plays Harvey Pekar in American Splendor, the autobiograpical tale of this pessimistic urbanist's struggle to find meaning within the banalities of modern existence. Through his real-life association with Robert Crumb, the comic genius behind Fritz the Cat, Harvey Pekar was inspired to create his own Cult Comic 'American Splendor'. This film wonderfully portrays Pekar's quirky life as he juggles his girlfriend, his developing comic book, appearances on Letterman and his drab job as a file clerk. In this film, the viewer finds magic in the ordinary, quiet pangs of suffering within the mundane, and humor in the unlikely. Pekar's eccentric personality simply shines through Giamotti's engaging performance and this DVD is worth purchasing on that basis alone. It's like a window has opened into another person's life - a life entirely contrasting from your own. American Splendor placed among many critics' Top Ten lists in 2003 and I highly recommend it as the movie you're looking for when you'd like to step out of your own reality and into another's different world.
Great film!
Thanks for the great film! Our public library did not have a copy so I was thrilled to get it for such a great price! Thanks!

Great movie with "different" characters
Harvey Pekar is a regular guy. He is no hero, and his life kinda sucks sometimes. He found his talent writing for a comic book. By the end you will find that you genuinely care about him and will cheer for him. You do not have to be a Hero to be worthy. Through his story you can find contentment in your life, whatever happens. the casting is very good and this is my favorite role for paul giamatti
